Default Warner's support of HD Formats

If Warner was serious about supporting Blu ray they would put uncompressed PCM, or Dolby Digital True HD on every Blu Ray that came out.

Naughty
Lethal Weapon 1 ,2 Dolby Digital
Polar Express Dolby Digital
T3

Nice

300 PCM
The Departed PCM
And the Harry Potter Films PCM

and the one that is in excusible movie in my opinion is T3 Rise of the Machiens, Dolby Digital excuse me it does not even have the bit rate of a DTS track on DVD for god sakes. That is why I will not pick it up, until WB give it the treatment it desirves.

Everything from here on out should have some form of lossless sound. Things that have been in the pipeline for awhile and are just coming out I think were too late to make these changes. But, the Kubrick's and Harry Potters for example all have PCM. The only exception I would imagine would be the HD DVD catch-up titles, which would probably, and unfortunately, be direct ports. The fortunate side of this is that most of these have TrueHD, ie Batman Begins, Matrix, V for Vendetta. I think Warner will be changing their tune REALLY soon.

Something tells me these are not direct ports. Simply because they are taking their time on them.. It is also likely that they are waiting for the new profile 1.1 or 2.0 to be out before releasing these so they can add all the interactive content they want.
Either way, it will look better than DVD.

the polar express, though, I think it's a direct port. It does not use PCM, and the bitrate is very small (compared to a similar movie - meet the robinson).
Meet the robinson reached 36+ picturewise, and 4 soundwise, while polar express? The highest I've seen is 20+, average 12. Audio is only in kbps

i think the reason why warner is releasing movies on Blu-Ray with the whole dolby digital nonsense is because of Hd-Dvd. they try to make it similar to the hd-dvd versions. so in other words its because they are neutral and Hd-Dvd has that crappy audio in most of their movies that means most of the time we suffer because of hd-dvd so if WB went Blu-Ray exclusive they wouldnt have an excuse to give Blu-Ray fans crappy audio. But however it seems to me like they only give out the more anticipated titles the great sound like 2001 A Space Odessy, 300, etc. But why didnt WB remaster the audio on Polar Express? They sure had plenty of time to do that. I still say its because the Hd-Dvd version has the Dolby Digital. But why does Happy Feet get Uncompressed sound on Hd-Dvd and not Blu-Ray?

A reliable source on this site told me The Bi-Polar Express was a direct port of a 15GB HD DVD. First, I am pissed I spent my money on it. Secondly, I'm appauled to think Toshiba was pushing THAT as the next generation HD media!

12 gbit average playback is right. DVD is 10 Gbit at best, and averages 8 gbit on a good disc. How do you give only a 25% boost in bit rate when the picture is 6 times as dense? Both formats are compressed so c'mon!

T3 is Dolby 640 Kbps on HD DVD, which is why it is 640 Kbps Dolby on Blu-ray.

When the titles with TrueHD come to Blu-ray like Batman and Matrix, they will have TrueHD, PCM or both.

Let's get Warner to go pro Blu and then we'll get on them about their lack of lossless audio.

I guess they are changing their plans now, have a look on "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - BD "

The Video: How Does The Disc Look?

The film's theatrical aspect ratio of 2.40:1 is presented in an excellent high definition transfer compressed with the VC-1 video CODEC. As one of the most prominent titles of the year, Warner seems to have done a very careful job with the transfer. I suspect Warner pushed the limits of storage capacity and bit rates for HD DVD before authoring the transfer for Blu-ray Disc. The studio even left the longest BD supplement off the HD DVD to make more room for the transfer. The images benefit; they are very sharp, with excellent finely grained textures and small object detail. Every hair in Dumbledore’s beard and the weave of Umbridge’s cardigan are extremely clear. Flesh tones are very natural and chroma is vivid without approaching iridescence, even during the mischievous fireworks. The video dynamic range is terrific, with no white crush and deep, rich blacks. However, I did see some suppressed shadow detail in dark scenes. Regardless, this is one of the best VC-1 transfers I’ve seen this year.

Audio is Phenomenal

"How can you go wrong with an uncompressed PCM 5.1 track? This is demo quality audio that fully immerses the viewer. The surrounds are extremely active with discrete effects and pans. Enable EX decoding for the best possible experience. Every aspect of the mix satisfies. Sound effects have a great dynamic range and attack times. Deep bass is felt as well as heard. I do miss John Williams, but Nicholas Hooper’s fine orchestral score is a pleasing blend of melodic and dark themes. It’s presented with exceptional fidelity across a very broad soundstage. Dialog is crystal clear throughout and may be heard with pleasing timbre. Well done, Warner.

At first i was hesitating to buy this title but now i'm going to buy it blindly

so now i will own three movies of Warner Bros after The Departed,Troy and now Harry Potter.

Nice, 9.5 PQ, 10 AQ.

They don't have the HD DVD review up, I'm curious to see it's AQ review.

George Lucas says that audio is 50% of the movie experience. I would have to say if you have a really active track eg Casino Royal or Black Hawk Down it is more like 60% of the experience for me at least. Why audio is more important to me than video, I still remained detached even from a movie with great video, while I can get totally emersed in the action if it has uncompressed PCM or another really active track.

If you want to end the format wars faster you need to buy as many WB disc as you can even if the sound isnt the best. All I hear is dont by HDDVD because you are just causing this format to continue same if you dont purchase WB Blurays. WB is deciding if they should exclusive with Bluray if people dont buy the Blurays it could cause WB to go HDDVD exclusive or stay Neutral. If you boycott WB because of sound not being up to par with your demands then dont preach about ending the format wars by not buying HDDVD because you are doing the same. I just bought Omega man which has the worst sound in the world it is WB I love the movie but can bare the Horrible sound just to have the Movie to watch is good enough for me plus Im helping win the war by buying Bluray.

Even with SD DVD, wasn't Warner using lower bit rate for DD? It seems they have often taken a minimalist approach to audio.

Warner has a great little game going on the HD movie fans of both formats. Each camp is trying to out purchase each other this December.

not sure if you were right. I thought the counts for bitrate on bd is on mbps?
I just saw a DVD for the first time for a long time. Interested in the mbps, and it's 7 mbps on average. not a lot difference than BDs that is originally HD DVD encode
