Default MP4 on dvd dl, play on a PS3?????

hey all.

had a question hope you guys could help out.
i was wondering if i dled a file, and it was 8gb big and came in mkv file.

after i would convert it into a mp4 file and then burn it onto a dl dvd.
could i play the whole movie on the ps3 ???? or would there be problems as it would like limit me to only 4gbs of the movie like it would with a external harddrive???

thanx

It's "probably" not a good idea to ask about advice on something that would break copyright law on a law-abiding forum like this one.

I haven't tried burning an MP4 to DVD and playing it on my PS3, but a quick Google search indicates that it should work just fine; you'll need to navigate to the DVD in the Xross Media Bar, select Details using the triangle button, and go from there, apparently.

File size could be a problem if the file is > 4GB. I don't believe the PS3 will recognize anything not formatted as FAT32, so you may be SOL in this case.

One other possibility to explore for you, if you haven't considered it, is to do a stream via a media center application like TVersity (http://www.tversity.com). Convert the file to AVC, share it via the media center application, and the PS3 will read it just fine regardless of the file size since it's being streamed.

Do you mean as a file or a DVD? I've burned a 5+ hour Japanese concert onto a DL DVD as a DVD (not just a file) and it played perfectly all the way through on my PS3. I'm sure just burning a file would be the same though.

Just convert the file to DVD video files then burn using something like Nero. This will basically create a playable DVD that will play in any DVD player, including the PS3.

Hey,

I appreciate your attempts to get rid of the xbox stuff,.. I can completely understand that notion.

At the same time consider,.. the file you're interested in is 8GB while the source it came from was likely 30GB. Look over those numbers and you will get the sense something is missing. A DVD version of a movie like transformers would use both layers of a DVD and weigh in more then 8Gb and that's just the DVD.

If what you're tying to do is simulate a HD DUD you're throwing out 66% of it before you even get started.

If you have the hardware for HD DUD,.. might as well keep it. I still have a LD player and only 2 movies for it. But,.. it's still worth it to hold on to it.

If I can get those movies on DVD then the LD player will go. Likewise when you can get Transformers on Blu Ray you can likely retire your HD DUD hardware.

wow guys thanx for all the replies

after fiddling around with some programs and downloading some sample files things seem to be looking up. ive downloaded about 5 sample files, (transformers, shrek the third, smokin aces, king kong, and F&F tokyo drift, and the results after converting them into a mp4 have been encouraging.

to the person who mentioned if im doing to convert the files to a dvd file or just leave it as a mp4, i still havent decided as most of the files im dl are around 4.3gbs as mkv and it seems as i convert them to mp4s they get smaller. so im leaning to see if i dl a full movie it would break the <4gb limit and just put it in my ps3 hdd

too the person that mentioned the size, that was probably the most concerning part to me, but thanks to the ps3 and its information options for videos, i checked the resolution and 4 came up 1280X554, and shrek came up at actually 1280X720.

PQ wise they look better than a dvd, but sound wise id say their equal or even less as some are in 2-ch format. with these results id prefer to get rid of that bloody hddvd add on as only transformers and hot fuzz are movies i would say are must haves for me in the red.
