The difference in terms of PS2 compatibilty between the 60 and 80 gig is only about 10%...chances are if you play PS2 games you'll be alright with the 80 too. The 40 doesn't play PS2, SACD (not a problem for most), and it only has 2 USB ports while the rest of them have 4. I would say go with the 80 because you'll at least get Motorstorm out of it. You can order it on Sonystyle.com for $499 and get a $100 credit if you apply for their credit card...it's a great deal. Then get some BDs and either rent or buy Uncharted and Ratchet....you won't be disappointed.

The 60 GB PS3 has the emotion engine processing chip found in the PS2. It does not use emulation. Therefore, it is more reliable and provides a better experience IMHO. |

As almost everyone has already stated, if you don't have any PS1 or PS2 games, then get either the 40 GB or the 80 GB based on what you can afford. What kind of TV/speaker setup do you have?

Eventually, the standalone PS2 pricing will go down. It wouldn't be impossible to probably find a new one for about $99 or even $50 at some point. And you can always buy it used for an even lower price.
At first, I was sold on the backwards compatibility, thinking that it would be nice to buy all those PS2 games for only $9 to $19 each, but that hasn't been the case. I always end up using the $9 or $19 to contribute to the next PS3 game or that hot Bluray movie. So far, the only PS2 titles that I've been eyeing are Street Fighter 3, Ratchet & Clank 1+2, and Metal Slug Anthology. But I can't find Street Fighter 3 brand new from a reputable seller. After playing Ratchet & Clank for the PS3, I really want to get Ratchet 1 & 2 for comparison of old gen and next-gen graphics and to see how Ratchet got started, but I hear that there is a motion or frame rate problem with backwards compatibility. And for Metal Slug, well, I don't want to pay full price for that game when I can get a PS3 game or bluray movie instead. If PS2 games are important to you, you'll probably be able to get a PS2 standalone at a very good price very soon, especially if you buy it used. So, I'd suggest that you go with the PS3 version that offers the most software and features for the money. Backwards compatibility should'nt be a factor for your purchase, to me at least. Plus, I don't think you'll be missing out on the PS2. There probably is better action happening on the PS3 than the PS2 in terms of graphics and new content. Developers will be focusing on the PS3, and as a result, you'll probably end up wanting to focus on the PS3, too, not the PS2. Most likely, you won't miss out on much either because the next gen versions of PS2 titles will also hit the PS3 with better graphics. Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy, Grand Turismo, MGS4, Ratchet, and so on...You'll be more busy with MGS4 than MGS1, 2, or 3 once that title comes out. I can't imagine that you'll rather buy Grand Turismo 1 for the PS2 rather than Grand Turismo 5 or whatever it is once it comes out on the PS3. If the 20GB version was still available, I'd suggest that one mainly because I like how the all black design without the chrome trims allows it the blend into the night when you turn the lights off to watch a movie or play a game. When you turn the lights off, it just disappears. With the chrom trim version or the white version, when you turn the lights off, you might still be able to see the consoles because of the television lights reflecting off of the chrome or white colors. Black aborbs light. Whites and chrome reflect it. Chance are, most people end up buying two PS3's. One for each room since it can serve as a DVD/BLURAY player and a gaming console. In the same way that most people have a DVD player in each room for each television... Last edited by secret; 12-10-2007 at 07:07 PM. |

I concur. The 80 GB is lot less quieter since it doesn't have the whole PS2 hardware/chip that 60 GB have. 80 GB uses software to run PS2 games and most recent games should be playable and all PS1 games are compatible. Trust me you won't be playing those PS2 games as soon as you play any PS3 game. Only one I actually played through the whole game in PS3 was God of War but I couldn't get past some of the other ps2 games' first level. Those games just felt slow and graphics was... ah what else ps2 graphics. Go with the 80 GB so you don't regret any missing features in the future.
