Eventually, the standalone PS2 pricing will go down. It wouldn't be impossible to probably find a new one for about $99 or even $50 at some point. And you can always buy it used for an even lower price.
At first, I was sold on the backwards compatibility, thinking that it would be nice to buy all those PS2 games for only $9 to $19 each, but that hasn't been the case. I always end up using the $9 or $19 to contribute to the next PS3 game or that hot Bluray movie. So far, the only PS2 titles that I've been eyeing are Street Fighter 3, Ratchet & Clank 1+2, and Metal Slug Anthology. But I can't find Street Fighter 3 brand new from a reputable seller. After playing Ratchet & Clank for the PS3, I really want to get Ratchet 1 & 2 for comparison of old gen and next-gen graphics and to see how Ratchet got started, but I hear that there is a motion or frame rate problem with backwards compatibility. And for Metal Slug, well, I don't want to pay full price for that game when I can get a PS3 game or bluray movie instead. If PS2 games are important to you, you'll probably be able to get a PS2 standalone at a very good price very soon, especially if you buy it used. So, I'd suggest that you go with the PS3 version that offers the most software and features for the money. Backwards compatibility should'nt be a factor for your purchase, to me at least. Plus, I don't think you'll be missing out on the PS2. There probably is better action happening on the PS3 than the PS2 in terms of graphics and new content. Developers will be focusing on the PS3, and as a result, you'll probably end up wanting to focus on the PS3, too, not the PS2. Most likely, you won't miss out on much either because the next gen versions of PS2 titles will also hit the PS3 with better graphics. Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy, Grand Turismo, MGS4, Ratchet, and so on...You'll be more busy with MGS4 than MGS1, 2, or 3 once that title comes out. I can't imagine that you'll rather buy Grand Turismo 1 for the PS2 rather than Grand Turismo 5 or whatever it is once it comes out on the PS3. If the 20GB version was still available, I'd suggest that one mainly because I like how the all black design without the chrome trims allows it the blend into the night when you turn the lights off to watch a movie or play a game. When you turn the lights off, it just disappears. With the chrom trim version or the white version, when you turn the lights off, you might still be able to see the consoles because of the television lights reflecting off of the chrome or white colors. Black aborbs light. Whites and chrome reflect it. Chance are, most people end up buying two PS3's. One for each room since it can serve as a DVD/BLURAY player and a gaming console. In the same way that most people have a DVD player in each room for each television... Last edited by secret; 12-10-2007 at 07:07 PM. |
