Old FPS games like Wolfenstein 3D don't age well but games like the Genesis Sonic and the SNES/NES Mario are still great today.

I disagree. Absolutely nothing released since has given me the sense of peace and fulfillment that killing Robo-Hitler did.

Of all my old PS1 and PS2 games (and I've had too many to count), I can think of only three that I would still play:
1. SOCOM
2. Metal Gear Solid
3. FF VII

And that, my friends, is it.

Oh ... what about FF Tactics? That's a great game ... and the first one that I actually beat on the original PS. Very fond of that game and still like to romp around in it now and then. And, then there's Vagrant Story ... that ending still has me stumped. And, let's not forget Crash Team Racing. I really liked that silly Bandicoot.

For PS2 ... well, FF9 is there. But the games that my and my son go back to is SOCOM (Combined Assault). A lot of fun. And, the MGS games ... and Silent Hill games ... <sigh> I still like my PS2 games.

Good thing that I have a 60GB PS3. There's a PS2 built right into that thing

EDIT: Oh, I didn't mention ... I too still have my PS2 ... both of them. I thought my first one died, so I went and bought a 2nd one ... then my oldest son got the "broken" one working again. So, he's got the original PS2 (and a 60GB PS3, by the way), any my youngest son has the 2nd PS2 (with hard drive and network adapter) in his room.

How 'bout "No!", Scott?

My sig shows my game collection; I still have my original Nintendo intact, no way I'm throwing away my PS2. Over 50 games as it is, plans to get another 30+, many of which I haven't even started yet. I have approximately 2 PS3 games. PS3 is great and has a nice looking future, but I need more variety than that. My PS2 has only just begun to have fun. And yes, I do go back and play old games extra times. Especially Mega Man X Collection and DDR Max/Extreme/SuperNOVA.

I've a 60 gig PS3, but I play the old games on the PS2 for vibration, better compatibility, and lower electric bills. In time, I may come to appreciate the upscaler on the PS3 a little more, but for now, I'm good.

...Are you for real? Good games are good games. The PS2 still has by far the best library of games. Just because the graphics may not be as good means absolutely nothing, unless you're one of those people who think graphics > gameplay, in which case there's no point in even trying to understand you.

Do you even play games?

You have to realize there are many old(er) games that have elements that no other game has improved on or even tried to be like!! Look at old Sonic games on the Gensis.. they are among my favorite.. and I play them from time to time. There is simply no game ever made that is anything like Sonic..and the new ones mostly suck. If a new Sonic came out that played similar to the old ones (with some obvious improvements) I would be all over it..

So.. mentioning Wolfenstein maybe shows you dont really get what we are referring to. There are a lot of old games that simply nothing compares yet to date. Until something does I may get a hair up my arse to play it
Mentioning Wolfenstein was for shock value and I do understand what you are referring to. Let me mention the online portion of today's gaming society. It really came to the forefront with the Xbox and then with Sony introducing FREE online gaming with the PS3 has changed the entire dynamics of why a lot of us play.

When I had PS2, I did not have it hooked up online and played all kinds of games in their single player campaigns or me and another buddy playing together. What I don't understand is how can someone (talking about PS2, PS1, and other older gaming consoles) play the same game over and over and over regardless of how good the "Game Dynamics" are against the system that does the same thing almost everytime? Wow, there's a challenge. And we are not talking about the graphics. Online is always different, IT'S ALWAYS DIFFERENT! Sure, in COD4 we play the same 12 maps, but the scores and enemies are always different. You learn new things and gain abilities. You play against better players and worse players. You have good rounds and bad rounds.

I love the baseball games and have played since the days of ColecoVision. I can play (and have played) a complete 162 game season against the computer and beat it almost everytime on almost any level - what the hell is the fun in that? Now go online and play against 1000's of other gamers and you see just how good you are. Then combine the "Game Dynamics" (we're looking for seamless realsim here) and great "Next Generation" graphics and that to ME is what I look for in gaming.

Not to worry if I can play games from the past (after I have played and beat them) when there is no longer a challenge.

Doubtful. If you have then I would expect to realize why certain older games are still played today. Just because something new is introduced doesn't mean the old is obsolete.

You mentioned in a previous post about what we're aiming for is seamless realism, that isn't always the case. When you look back, games couldn't be realistic because of the hardware limitations, so instead they had to rely on other elements to really bring you into the game and just enjoy the hell out of it. There's still a nice chunk of people that wish developers would make just "fun" games, but they don't sell well. Not everything needs to be as realistic as our everyday lives.

Also, you can't always rely on online to satisy your multiplayer. I mean, how many times have you been in a game and some jerk you're playing against just pauses the game for minutes on end? At the same time, if you're about to win, they'll just quit. I'm sure for the sake of the discussion you'll claim that neither has ever happened to you, but it happens all the time to a lot of people.

Not all 1p games are the same everytime. Some are.. but its not like you play them all the time. Just saying its fun to rotate older games sometimes. Anyway, I am playing COD right now . It is more repetitious than most games in a awy. You do the same thing over and over.. .just in different order every time. But yes you are right the challenge is always there and varies every game. What you are saying is really more of 1p vs multi player not really older games. I almost always enjoy a good single player game over multiplayer but that is just me. I don't typically get as many hours out of them though.. but the ones I do are more enjoyable.

Opinion is opinion and that's what I love about these forums. I love getting a good rise out of people.

Sure, I've had my issues with online play and online players, but that's the few and not the many. Depends on what games you like as well. I love the baseball games, FPShooters and the odd racing or action game. A lot of times you can limit the play of the jerks that screw with/up your online experience (ie. GRAW2) when you host a match.

As for "FUN" games, I say that exemplifies the Wii system and I would say that has sold, and is still selling pretty well.

If you read a bit further into my last post you referred to, I mention I don't see the point in playing the same game over and over and over in a single player campaign. How does that make it a great game? If it's limited in it's graphics but the "Game Dynamics" are great BUT you know how the system will respond to your play (because you played the game for 200 hours and beat the game 25 times already) what the hell is the point?

TIME TO MOVE ON.

I don't care for backwards compatibility. In australia some folks are complaining about it(even people who don't like playstation to begin with). We only have the 40Gb down here and I keep telling my friend to just get the 40Gb PS3 and another PS2 if he wants to give his existing one to his sibling, it's still cheaper than what the PS3 originally cost and you can get a PS3 game, a psp or an accessory or two with the change. People really should stop being so emotional about BC and more methodical, because now those that want BC have to pay extra for it.

That's is a truly great idea. When PS4 comes out, instead of giving my PS3 away to a co-worker for free, I will certainly donate it and all it's games to the Alberta Children's Hospital.

That is one of the best ideas I have ever read in this forum.

I still have my original NES, SNES, and PS1. Personally, I like to hook them up and play some old games once in a while. It's great for a few hours of fun, brings back memories, and you can really appreciate the difference in older games between newer games. Maybe the younger gamers won't understand and really appreciate older games, but I enjoy the classic, original games on these older consoles. Sure you can play them on emulators/roms (which I sometimes do since using the computer is easier and I have a USB to controller adapter) but the feel of the older controllers, etc. brings in a nice touch of nostalgia IMO.
