Review from my blog:

Quote:
Piranha 3D Blu-Ray Review (Australian Release):

Note: The Australian release indicates on the back cover that it is coded for all regions, and unlike the American release contains both tyhe 2d and 3d versions of the film as well as the special features found only on the 2d release in America.

Picture Quality:

Piranha 3D comes to blu-ray presented in 2.40:1 using the AVC codec. Note: Piranha was shoot using ‘traditional’ 2d cameras and was in post converted to 3d. However unlike other films that have been converted and released this year, it was intended to convert Piranha before shotting begun, and thus the film was shoot with 3d in mind. Despite this the 3d is mediocre at best, and the planned to be shot in 3d really seems to have translated to throw some stuff at the audience. Furthermore depth seems to be lacking in several shots. Thankfully ghosting is kept to a minimum, outside of the opening titles which have egregiously noticeable ghosting. Detail is strong throughout and colours are generally natural. Likewise very little black crush is evident. There is also some banding in several scenes but otherwise digital anomalies are nowhere to be seen.

Note: the 3D blu-ray of Piranha contains both the 2d and 3d version of the film. Minus the issues directly related to 3d (ghosting for example), the 2d and 3d version are identical in terms of detail, banding etc.

Audio Quality:

Presented using a 5.1DTSHDMA soundtrack Piranha comes to blu-ray with adequate, yet underwhelming results. Detail is strong throughout, and the sound design is good (but far from great). Surround is used during several of the piranha attacks but at no stage did I fell the ‘swarm’ surround me. Voices are clear throughout and are kept within the centre channel. Outside several ‘party’ moments with bombing bass songs the LFE is modestly present but lacks the punch that was occurring on screen, in what is sadly an average audio track.

Special Features:

Piranha 3D comes to blu-ray with a small number of special features, which hold no real value and are as disappointing as the small number of special features that are provided.

The Film Itself:

Piranha is a film that feels like it has had an identity crises, on one hand Piranha aims to be a horror comedy but at other times (in particular the beach attack) it seems to be going for extreme gore. Sadly unlike Drag Me To Hell or Evil Dead 2, the two never really work well with one another and thus the film fells like two different takes on the same general story with the final result being the film-makers deciding to use scenes from both and putting them next to each other. It must also be said that the cgi Piranhas always look like cgi and never really seem a part of their environment. Given this the Piranhas are never able to appear in the slightest bit threatening and they fell detached to the film (which given Piranha is the title of the film is quite disappointing). It is not all bad, those looking to see a notable amount of gore will be pleased and there are also several chuckle worthy scenes.

The Verdict:

Piranha 3D comes to blu-ray and comes with a strong video presentation, average sound quality a poor selection of special features and thus comes recommended as a skip if the trailer did not interest you. However if the trailer did seem like a fun film to you it comes recommended as a rent.

Thanks for sharing your review Suntory Times! It pretty much sums up how I felt when I saw this at the theaters. The gore and the comedy didn't mesh well. It was fun when Jerry O'Connell was onscreen providing the laughs and filming the porn-- and watching it in 3D was eye-candy-- but it generally lacked the excitement I was hoping to see. And you're right, the CGI piranhas just looked so unnatural to be believable. And the movie ended so soon. I remember thinking when it was over, "Is that it?" What are the deleted scenes, how much deleted scenes are there, and are they in 3D as well? Would like to know more feedback on the special features- what are they specifically. Thanks.

They try to push a severed penis into your face. Ha ha.

This movie could have been a lot of fun if done with real 3D. As it is I doubt I'll be buying it anytime soon. Maybe some day though.

I wish Sony would do 3D combo packs like Disney and Univeral are doing. I don't have the money for a 3D TV yet but I want to future-proof my collection as much as possible so I've been buying 3D combo packs when available. This is one I'd really like to have but no dice.

Uhm, I'm sorry, either I don't get your point, or you might not know that about all Blu-ray 3D releases (incl. Sony's) are perfectly playable on your current (2D) BD-player, so why not just buy this one in 3D and enjoy it in 2D for the moment?

By the way, personally, I don't like Disney and Universal waisting another disc for 2D seperately, while you can simply watch both 2D and 3D from 1 and the same disc. Luckily, Step Up 3D has the digital copy on the same disc as the DVD (that saves at least one disc).

I would prefer 2 options for every release: one with only a HD disc (the Blu-ray-3D format, with 2D capability), and one option with 2 discs, being the former HD-disc as well as a SD-disc (with DVD and digital copy formats). The second option could be priced a few bucks more (max $5), IMHO. Just my $0.02.

It does, in that it tries to, but the conversion is the worst conversion on blu-ray (yes, clash and airbender are both better on there blu-ray releases) and thus it doesn't really pop out very well.

It's by no means bad and it does have its moments, overal it's merly average though.

Deleted scenes, SD trailer, audio commentary. Nothing really worth watching aside from the commentary unless you're a huge fan.

What are the deleted scenes if you don't mind? Can you list them?

So, the Austrailian release is missing the 2.5 hour doc broken up into 10 "featurettes"?

Watched this yesterday and must say enjoyed it, as for a horror well I was laughing at lot.

3D was not bad, had some pop out scenes which were good.

AQ was awesome.

$1 less than the 2D version on Amazon currently.

AND,... it still qualifies for free shipping for reasons I don't understand.

I ordered and hope they deliver soon. I can't wait to check it out and it makes me want to upgrade to 3D soon.

My review was for the Australian release. One disc is provided which can be played back in either 2d or 3d.

I forgot to put that in. It isn't as good as the other features though, I was probably a bit harsh. The special features are okay, but they are nothing special (and the documentary which I was hyped to see, even after I thought the film was merly okay, was very dissapointing). Also all the special features where all in SD.

The deleted scenes are presented in 2d and in SD. I also agree, the piranhas show up at the begining and then basically vanish and then show up far to little for a film called Piranha.
