Default SED canned by Toshiba!!

So that's it then, OLED it is, Toshiba have sold their part of SED Inc. to Canon, who will now produce it themselves.

I suppose that is what you get for letting other companies do the R&D for you, if you fall out with them, bye bye.

Sony have pledged their continuing to researching OLED and FED technology as their replacement for LCD.

What Toshiba will pursue now, not even they know.

Hopefully realise they are getting the shaft from MS. That would be a good next step for Toshiba.

To me, this is a sign that Toshiba has had their net spread too wide for some time with this HD-DVD debacle that they and MS are holding up by themselves with a lot of smoke and mirrors plus SED.

I'll be interested to see what/if Canon does with SED. If anything, my overall confidence in SED just went up with Toshiba no longer being involved with it.

You know what they say about limited peanut butter and too much bread. Toshiba is a company that does not have a reputation to rely on should they hit some hard-times. Sony have been very lucky for the last couple of years that people continued to buy their products even though the vast majority of them were sub-Sony-standard. Sony took a hit, yes, but a small hit, Toshiba cannot afford to take that kind of hit as their reputation would not recover so quickly and they would lose MS as friend/partner very quickly.

Just remember Blu-ray is not vital for the continued survival of Sony, but HD DVD is vital for Toshiba.

Oh man!!!

That was the one thing from Toshiba I was really looking forward too. CRT rulz and will always rule in the film playback quality.

Grrrrr

Who is going to produce a 4Kx2K display now?! (only half kidding)

The reason why Toshiba sold thier share to Canon is because of patent issue. A company so called "Nano-Proprietary" licenses their patents to Canon (not Toshiba) and it has sued Cannon about its patent being used by "SED Corporation", which is a joint company - Toshiba has 50% share of it and Canon has 50% + one stock of it. Canon has claimed that SED Corp. is a subsidiary of Canon because Canon has 50% + one share, but Nano Proprietary has not agreed with that.

Now SED Corp. is 100% subsidiary of Canon, this patent dispute will be terminated, but Toshiba and Canon's initial plan - establishing mass production facility using Toshiba's Himeji plant is completely called-off, therefore Toshiba will become a panel buyer from Canon and Toshiba's involvement about SED will be unknown.

Ah right. The patent thing.

OK, so it may still happen. Phew, that is good news.

This is an "inconvenient truth" that simply can't be repeated enough.

Nano-whatever have rescinded their license from Canon as well at this point and have stated that they are going to negotiate a new one, if one cannot be thrashed out they will actively seek new partners for the construction of SED panels.

I've always thought that SED is where Toshiba should be in and not HD-DVD because the future revenue stream is there if Toshiba can do 1080p120 for a 60" SED. It's also too complicated to be cheated out of by the Chinese CEs.

Hopefully, Canon and Toshiba can work out a deal with Sony as a partner in developing SED. Then Sony can't lose. One feet in OLED and the other in SED. Of course, other companies might be pursuing Canon-Toshiba already, namely Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips or Korea's Samsung/LG.

Atm Sony are pumping money into OLED and FED, which by the looks of it is turning out to be a good move, all of the CES attendees are saying the 1,000,000:1 OLED TV was awesome. Sony themselves have said FED is the only flatscreen tech that will live up to CRT, and boy do Sony know CRT.

I wouldn't have thought Sony would go in for tech that they have no stake (therefore no royalties) in at the moment. OLED is their baby and FED is something they have been researching for nearly 10 years so they must have a decent amount of IP invested in both. Sony doing SED would show that their R&D department hasn't come up with the goods, when it really has, OLED should take the fight to SED when both are ready for primetime in a 18-24 months.
