Default Whatever happened to SED TV ?

So what's going on with SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display) TVs?
It's been a while since I heard anything about where Canon/Toshiba are
going with them and when we might actually see one available.

I'm liking OLED's overall prospects a lot more than SED's these days.

I thought OLED's had longevity issues to be worked out and I know the SED's had problems.
I'm not particularly buying into either one, I just hadn't heard any news in a while about the
SED's and was trying to get up to date.

Not any more, OLED has a 20,000 hour half life. The clever people at Sony fixed the Blue diode to increase the lifesapn.

SED is dead in the water at the moment as the IP holders have basically chucked Toshiba (the money) and Canon (the brains) off the [gravy] train.

Pioneer is supposed to be releasing an entirely new type of plasma tv this summer. It is supposed to be better than SED. Pioneer is claiming it will have a contrast ratio greater than 100,000:1. Check out this article from IGN: http://gear.ign.com/articles/753/753836p1.html

Pioneer just seems to be so far ahead of the competition, consistently. They were the best when I bought my plasma five yrs ago, and they're the best now. I have no doubt they'll be the best when I go looking for my next display in a couple of years.

Mitsubishi is developing the laser dlp tv. It uses the regular TI dlp chip, but instead of a lamp shooting light through a color wheel, it uses red, green, and blue laser beams. Lasers will give extremely vivid colors, and naturally, too, so stores won't have to pump up the display settings to show off the picture. Also, unlike all other microdisplays, black areas will have no light at all, it will be a true black. Most projection tvs have good blacks now, but there is still minimal light that gets through, and this is eliminated on the laser dlp.

It is supposed to come out this fall, with some people estimating a $5,000 price tag, but who knows at this point. I'm going to think about getting one, because of the superior color depth and blacks it is sure to have, just by the nature of lasers.

If you go to google and type in "mitsubishi laser dlp," you will get search results that are very good.

Let's face it:

SED IS DEAD and it's Toshiba that must be blamed for it.

Toshiba focused so much on an optical format (that was deemed to lose at the turn of the year) that they left their priority on SED.

Now look at it, they were a NO SHOW at CES 2007 and heck, even Pioneer has something better to offer than SED.

It looks like as the saying goes: *SED IS DEAD*

EDIT:
Disclaimer: When I meant by "SED IS DEAD", I kinda meant it to be a bashing statement to mock/ridicule against Toshiba but it is PRIMARILY meant as a joke (for humor purposes).

I apologize if this has caused any confusion among readers.

Yup.

The statement has been edited.

Going back, it appears Toshiba makes crap TVs so far.

I mean, I was almost happy with their latest Regza units (which use this form factor):

These ones with the "arc-like" base (ala Sharp Aquos).

I mean with 100hz refresh rate, three HDMI ports and 6 ms response time (faster than its slower 8 ms predecessor), there's nothing to lose, right?

Until I saw the back and in shock, I was disappointed that this set was made in............Indonesia.

Come on, this was supposed to be Toshiba's flagship LCD line with 1080p. Yet they choose cheap manufacturing sites such as Indonesia.......for making their flagship TVs?!?!?

It's like how Samsung Mosel LCD TV sets are made in Thailand and it's just as sucky as how Sony makes S-series and V-series TV sets in Malaysia (no offense Writesimply). I'm sure some people stateside are disappointed when they look at the back at their XBR 2/3 sets and see that their expensive TV is just "Made in Mexico".....

But I believe Toshiba takes the greatest hit and is even worse, their entire 1080p line is built in some factory in Karawang region . I mean for WXGA sets, it's okay to build them overseas....but for flagship/high-end sets....uhh no thanks.

I'm glad that for me, Writesimply, What's HD and others from Asia-Pacific, our Sony BRAVIA X-series sets are 100% MADE IN JAPAN (unlike the US/Canada/Central/South America sets that are Mexican-made).

Highest quality from Japan (or straight from the source)> any overseas-made TV

Now it's time for Samsung to remove their production of high-end 1080p HDTVs from Thailand BACK TO KOREA.

If 1080p is a high-end luxury, then we consumers deserve the highest quality.
