Hi, i just started playing FFXII on my PS3 and it isn't what i expected it would be. The graphics are really horrible compared to the ps2 :s, its very "blocky"
Im using a 60gig PS3, DVD upscaler is on. It could be my TV tho, im using a sony bravia KDL-40u2000. Is something wrong with my settings? Or is it just my TV thats to old? |

Running FFXII on my TV and it looks fine.
You must not have smoothing on. Remember DVD upscaling does not apply to games. You have to set it differently. You should also make sure the game is set to widescreen or it will stretch out the image. Turn on smoothing as well. Just play with the setting while you have the game on (use the PS button) and the game settings as well and see what works best for you. |

I was personally very pleased with visuals of FFX2 on PS3...
It's not PS3 quality but it was a lot of fun... Watch out for the last boss...pretty tricky... Great game...tad on the short side at about 25-30 hours or so to complete. |

Make sure you're using the latest System Software (2.01) too.

I can't stand playing PS2 games on my PS3 with my 1080p HDTV. Even with the upscaler on. They're horribly artifacted... jaggies everywhere. I've taken to playing them on my PS2 on an older CRT TV. Much better visual quality.

It seemed that the smoothing muted the colors a bit to much for my liking. Yes it looks pixelized, but it was also sharper in some cases. |

In the options menu, there is a choice to turn off the battle lines. So you will not see the red and blue targeting markers.

I find that FFXII looks better with Smoothing on and upscaling off. The game runs fine and looks okay most of the time... some cut scenes are AMAZING considering they're done in real time on the PS2. Don't use the in-game smoothing and PS3 smoothing together... very blurred!
I personally hate the fact that ALL video sequences are not full screen... seems very poor for a Squaresoft game!! FFXII definatley looks better on a PS2 through a component cable in my opinion, but once you play for a few hours you get used to the pixels. The red and blue lines can be turned off in the options menu. |

If only Square-Enix would release a straightforward PS3 port of the game with 1080p native res, Blu-ray quality movies, antialiasing and other easy to implement graphical fixes. They'd make a mint I'm sure of it and tide us over with something a bit more visually palatable until FFXIII.
I'd love to see the same done for Shadow of the Colossus too. Would benefit so much just from a resolution increase. |

I wish something would emerge from that FFVII PS3 teaser that came out a ways back, now THAT would be gigantic! |

They keep making remakes of space invaders, midway arcade classics and tons of crappy mega drive games no-one bought the first time round, so a PS2 game released as a PS3 game using higher res seems viable. Probably, not cost effective though? I dunno. Wish they'd consider hybrid games... you know like say FFXII for PS2, but stick it in a PS3 and the game realises and instead of running on PS2 emulation, it runs at a higher res, etc. as a PS3 game. Kind of a dual format in one box. Or like a PC game, it'll run on a low spec, but, play it on a faster better machine and you get the best out of it. Then again, you're limited to DVD storage space and the problems that ensue (ala xbox 360). T'was but a thought. I suppose a dedicated version is the way forward. Shadow of Collosus would be a great remake! Saying that, wouldn't it be fun just to see something even newer and more original instead. Saying that FFVII in realtime 3D with the advent children quality characters and battle system of FFXII... perhaps even featuring Advent Children as gameplay if you complete the game and collect everything. That'd be nice. I'd like to see the FFVII tech demo in 1080P (or 1080i in my case) on the blu-ray Advent children as a bonus. I've only seen med-res quicktime videos that won't play full screen.
