Default Final Fantasy XI PS3 fell through cracks

http://www.qj.net/Final-Fantasy-XI-P.../49/aid/127144

Quote:
If things went differently, we could have actually been romping around Vana'diel and consorting with Shantotto on the PS3. Turns out that Square Enix had plans to release Final Fantasy XI on the PS3 as well - and not just the PC, Xbox 360, and PS2.

According to Hiromichi Tanaka, FFXI producer, it could have gone well if Sony didn't fall short on the bargain. Fall short of one representative, that is. And continuing plans of getting the MMORPG on the console are proving fruitless because PS2 backwards compatibility across all PS3 SKUs is looking quite impossible:

"Initially we were in talks with a representative from Sony [to achieve this], but it appears that that person quit. [Current] PS3s don't have PS3-side PS2 emulation, and it doesn't look like Sony has any plans to address that issue. For that kind of thing to even be conceivable, it would have to be on a disc. Digital downloads wouldn't work for this. The disc has to be in the system for the emulator to work."
interesting

Yeah, a FF XI game for the PS3 would be a good idea, because it solves the problem with what Sony don't plan on doing at this moment (backwards compatibility) and people won't be PO'd at the fact that the game needs a hard drive to play, something not all 360's have.

This was the only FF that I had no desire to play. I didn't want to pay a monthly fee to play the game.

this story seems to make it pretty clear those rumors of an emulator are way wrong

I hear you man, I also don't like the fact that you HAVE to have other people involved in order to level up at a certain point.

What about this free download they have to run HDD enabled PS2 games on the PS3???

So, if you have backwards compatible PS3 and a copy of FF XI, then technically you should be able to play...no???

What's the big deal with releasing a copy for the PS3???

They could have a system where the ps2 game owners send in their old games and trade up...or...something.

There are plenty of ways around this.

Wow, are they serious? They said it would take to much work that it would be better to just make a whole new MMORPG game for the PS3.
Ive been playing FFXI for years on PS2 then on my 60GB PS3.
Always wanted a revamped version with higher resolution.

Edit Adding:

Why dont Square enix just make a PS3 version with higher resolution like they did with the 360?
I dont get why they would need backwards compatibility because it would still be limited to the PS2's ability.
