Here's some more fuel for that raging format war fire.
According to a story from Home Media Magazine that cites a new study, potential HDTV buyers are choosing HD DVD over Blu-Ray for their movie needs. The study shows that 43% of prospective HDTV consumers are leaning towards HD DVD, while just 27% are leaning towards Blu-Ray, with a large 30% undecided. The study claims that the price is the determining factor for high-def rookies. The study, conducted by The Diffusion Group, was based off of two Internet surveys of 1,500 and 2,000 adults, during October and November. "The strength of this preference and its correlation to mainstream attributes are notable," said Michael Greeson, president and principal analyst with TDG. "The next wave of buyers is comprised of early mass-market consumers, a much larger segment with a focus on practical consideration such as price." Andy Tarzcon, a founding partner of The Diffusion Group, said that the studies were independent and partial, not taking a side for either format. The 30% undecided vote, he said, was a clear sign that this war is far from over. "We're not declaring a winner," Tarczon said. "We're saying the battle is not over." |

Let's call a spade a spade here, shall we?:
I was going to post about this article before this happened, but got busy with work so now it's time for damage control. First off, why didn't the OP give a link to the complete article: http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/ques...1607/index.php Now, for those of you who don't want to click the link and just want the meat of it all: The research is based on two different surveys done by the Dallas-based research firm The Diffusion Group (TDG), and consisted of, are you ready for this? 1,500, and 2,000 U.S. adult internet users. Furthermore, the research was done in October and November. For those of you who haven't been paying attention, this is well before the PS3 price-drop, and subsequent price-drop of many stand-alone players. In addition to that, the response from the BDA was basically that without studio support and inexpensive media, inexpensive hardware is pretty much worthless. And yes, I'm para-phrasing. But again, click the link above and read the entire article for yourself. Finally, the founding partner of TDG stated that the fact that 30% of respondents were undecided represented a swing vote in the format war. Take that how you will, but I took it to mean that basically, unless this war ends, no one is going to win and both sides will lose. So what's up with the OP? A misleading thread title, and pro HD DVD exerpts from the article with no Blu response? {sniff-sniff} Does anyone else smell it? |

I have already adressed this (as it was an Engadgethd article a week or so aggo).
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...863#post408863 Let me reiterate that this TDG is more than suspicious 1) it took side against Blu Ray as early as the Blockbuster anouncement 2) TDG was invited by Toshiba to basically present pro HD DVD and anti Blu Ray facts at their media Panel at the Home Media Expo 07. 3) TDG just release an "opinion", that now refers (amazingly enough, right at the Xmas period) to a study conducted before July 07 about Gamers and HD. That same study (they do not reveal their methodology, cause they want you to buy their report. I think $2500 a piece) is now unavailable on their website (strange uh?), so we can't know how they did this research. 2000 broadband users? from which website? which carrier? Who sponsored the study ? Very shaddy imho. |

Who cares about what some mediocre group says about HD. Surveys like this keep perpetuating this stupid format war.

I think this survey if taken today would favor Blu-ray.
The PS/3 at $400 is starting to really move players and increase Blu-ray awareness at the same time. Also now that many Blu-ray vendors are tossing in a Blu-ray player with the TV this becomes a moot point. The player is now free in those cases. |

And in that same Home Media magazine, there's a report of a sub-$300 Samsung blu-ray player on the market now, so it's really not a big price difference any longer. And for the record, it appears that it's priced that way because it cannot support profile 1.1 for PIP...

The viral marketers for Toshiba/Microsoft are really stepping their game up. After the excellent moderation this forum receives has eliminated all the obvious trolls the astroturfers realized they would need to post more subtle propaganda. I'm not sure anyone that has fewer then 10 posts should be allowed to start a thread in the General Discussion forum.

![]() Ok, Post 1, nine to go... I'm not sure you need to worry about finding others who have a bias towards hd-dud. They seem pretty obvious to most here, as it only takes a few minutes before they are debunked, and not heard from again. BTW- Lurker, who finally signed up. :-) Joe |
