Default PS3 Placement?

I have recently heard in this forum that the PS3 gets hotter inside when placed vertically. Also, I have heard here that some people that have gone from horizontal to vertical placement have noticed a decrease in fan noise. I have recently switched to vertical and I think I can hear a difference.

I just bought one for my b/f as Christmas present so this question really interest me. Does Sony say which is the best way to place it?

Mine's horizontal right now, but only because I moved things around. It will go back to being vertical when i've finally built my entertainment unit.
Custom baby.

I saw the website, it was a Polish one. You can check it out here. I think the difference was only a couple of degrees centigrade but it appears to be best to keep it horizontal. I have not even had mine heat up to anything other than barely warm yet.

I personally prefer horizontal placement b/c in my eyes, it looks cooler and more traditional. I think the design of the PS3 suits it more as a horizontal machine than a vertical. Perhaps if it was more blocky, than it would fit better as a vertical machine, but due to its curvy design, I think horizontal is preferred.

Mine is vertical, always has been, and it doesn't get hot at all. My fan never gets to the point where I can hear it......unless i get up at 1am to get a drink of water and then i can barely hear it since there are no other noises.

This is just kinda personal preferance but in my opinion placing it vertical looks pretty low rent.

Here are the pics for anyone who can't see the site at work

There are temperatures recorded at the bottom of each photo telling you the max temp in each position. Horizontal has a slight edge.

I have always kept mine horizontal and have never experienced heating issues or excessive fan noise.

*side note* Can I just say how much I love Sony's attention to detail and the fact that you can rotate the PS logo to match a vertical or horizontal placement of your system. Fantastic.

I keep mine horizantal but I made little risers for it that keep it an extra 3/4" off the surface. I've had no heat or noise issues.

At BB they sell some kind of fan unit is this a good idea? I did buy the 4 year warranty at employee price so I am covered but id rather just have it not break on me. Does the fan actually serve a purpose?

No, don't buy any intercooler or fan attachment product. They are junk.

I have mine horizontal.

fans are useless and watch because the fan itself might void the ps3 warranty and is likely to cause it to break... theres one thread i saw that was just on that... if i find it i'll edit and post link

Do you think the risers help?

It makes little difference how you position it, but what really matters is if you have it in an open or closed spot. I do not keep mine in the entertainment center, I keep it outisde of it on the right. I play for hours daily and don't have a problem.
