for best position in your room, place the sub at the listening position, then go sit where you want to put it, if it sounds good there, then put it there, if not, move around until you find a good spot for it.

Your question was about placement of your sub. If a sub is placed near a wall away from corners it has two surfaces to work with boosting the subs efficiency by 2 decibels, if you corner load ( placement ) your sub you get a 3 decibel increase in efficiency. If calibrate your system with an sound pressure level meter you won't hear the difference but you sub won't have to work as hard, if you sub had an efficiency of 98 decibels @ 1 watt @ 1 meter to increase the sound output of your sub 3 decibels you would have to double the power to the sub, 3 decibels more 4 watts and so on. The breakdown of these numbers are as follows in watts ( 1 - 2 - 4 - 8 - 16 - 32 - 64 - 128 - 256 - 512 - 1024 ) A note on human hearing our ability to hear a change in volume is 3 decibels, so when you push the volume up you must double the wattage to actually notice a difference in volume. hope this helps corners are the best location for you sub it's like doubling the power of your sub for free.

Don't put it anywhere near a corner, unless you want bloated, muddy, one-note bass (a sub that needs to be put near the corner is not, IMHO, worthy of the moniker "subwoofer"). The suggestion about putting the sub in the listening position and then moving around the room for the best sound is a good idea.

See my other post for why the corner is about the worst place you could put a half-decent sub. |
