Well, for those who have tried this, of course you know. For those who don't or don't own a PS3, well you won't know. And that's the point of the thread.
![]() ----------------- A) First, you have to download and SAVE those HD trailers. No point in downloading but not able to save it. To download HD trailers on Movies.Yahoo.Com, you have to Google search it. Type the name of the movie and Yahoo, then look for the link with HD on it. I looked for it using Yahoo's main page and I couldn't find it. Then click on 1080p and it should power up Quicktime and your download starts. After it has finished downloading, save the file as a self-contained from (File-Save) and set it at a directory of your choice on your computer's directory. - - - - To download HD trailers on Apple's site is a bit trickier, I think. I for one can't save it. The work around I found that worked like a charm is by using Download Accelerator (adware - free but with ads) or other softwares that quickens your download. First click on the 1080p download. Quicktime will powerup and it'll start to download. While it's doing that, click on the Quicktime toolbar: Window -> Show Movie Info. It'll show you the source of where you're downloading it from. Use Notepad to type out the address carefully and EXACTLY. Once you've typed that in, select and CTRL-C to copy it. Open Download Accelerator and paste the link. Now your download will be much faster. ----------------- B) Once you've got the Quicktime HD files, you have to change it to MP4. The PS3 doesn't recognize .MOV files. I don't know what the situation regarding audio decoding on those MP4 files. Maybe others can chime in but since the setup I was listening to was only for stereo, that's what I got. You don't have to remux the file. All you need to do is change the container it is in, in the file format sort of way. Two ways you can do this. 1) On Quicktime's toolbar, click on File -> Export Some clips allow you to do this but the Spider-man trailer I downloaded from iFilm greyed this one out. A menu will pop up. Under Export, find Movie to MPEG-4 option from the drop-down menu. 2) Once you've select that, click on the Options button. 3) First thing you change is the top most one. Under File, choose from the drop-down menu MP4 instead of MP4 (ISMA). 4) Directly underneath that, the drop-down menu has three options: Video, Audio and Streaming. You only going to be using Video and Audio. Choose Video first. 5) Under Video Format, choose Pass through from the drop-down menu. 6) Change the drop-down menu to Audio. Choose Pass through again. Here "Pass through" will tell Quicktime to change the container but not re-encode (remux) the clip which would take a long time. 7) Click Ok. Then on the next window, click Save. The change in container will take roughly 30 seconds even on an ol' Pentium 3 laptop. - - - - If you can't use Quicktime to convert, use Yamb. It's freeware (v. 1.6) 1) After you've installed the program (it's 1.8Mb), From the Mux tab, add the file to change the container to. At the bottom of the Yamb window, rename the file as you wish, so long as the extension is .MP4. 2) It will take Yamb about 1 minute to change the container. It'll bring up the Log tab. At the end of the process however, the log will say that the Muxing failed. Ignore that. The resulting MP4 file is good to go. ----------------- To play the clips on the PS3, you can use a flashdrive, CD-Rs or DVD-Rs. I haven't tried flashdrive nor CD-Rs yet. Before you burn your CD-Rs/DVD-Rs, make sure you create a [Video] directory on them then put all of the MP4s in there before burning the disc. The same is true for flashdrive I hear. Somebody said that with CD-Rs you can't use it to playback the MP4. That's logical considering the bitrates of these HD files, but you can use it to save the MP4 files into the HDD of the PS3. You can play it quite well most of the time with DVD-Rs but if you experience stuttering, again save it on the HDD. How to view it? At the XMB, go to the video icon. Access the disc. It'll take some time to list all the clips but it'll show. Then play it. Pure HD goodness! ----------------- It's really not a lot of steps. Fairly simple and you don't have to be too much of a tech geek to do this. Some of the trailers that worked well without showing ANY compression are: 300 : teaser on Apple's site & US Domestic trailer on Yahoo. GREAT EYE CANDY! Arthur & The Invisibles : Apple. Nice colors and textures. Balls Of Fury: Apple. Nice natural colors. Because I Said So: Apple. Nice natural colors. Curse Of The Golden Flower: Apple. EYE CANDY! Fantastic 4 teaser: Apple. Some compression but overall great and the clip is great. Happy Feet: teaser at Apple. EYE CANDY Letters From Iwo Jima : Apple Meet The Robinsons: Apple. Just an indication of what CGI looks like in HD. Pan's Labyrinth: Apple. Grainy but nice Perfume: Apple. Good stuff but the audio oddly doesn't work for me. Ratatouille: Apple. Just an indication of what Pixar films will look like on BD. Shrek 3: Apple. Teaser. Just like Ratatouille. Transformer: Yahoo for the trailer (the teaser sucks) Crowd favorite. The great thing about doing this is that you can archive all the teasers and trailers on your HDD/DVD and then if you wanna watch it again, should the BD doesn't have it, you can just pull it out of your shelf and play it on the PS3. There you go. One lenghty post on HD trailer playback for the PS3. The only thing that I can't figure out is that trying to select several of the clips and let it play as a list aka playlist. Anyone can help me out? fuad |

Use this website for apple downloads.
http://www.davestrailerpage.co.uk/ Also, since I don't have quicktime pro, I use this to convert quicktime movies into mp4. http://www.mp4converter.net/mp4-converter-win.html Last edited by Bruuce; 01-15-2007 at 02:55 AM. |

From that image, it says 720p. Does that mean 1080p MOV gets converted to 720p? If that's so, then it's not a good converter to use.
Yamb is freeware and I've only used it to change the .MOV container to .MP4 container. It works like a charm, it doesn't change the resolution to 720p, file size gets smaller by a few KBs and all of this in 1 minute. Quicktime does this faster and the file gets smaller by 1KB. Remember the changing of MOV is not about demux and re-mux. It's about changing the containers. fuad |

Okay, here's an interesting thing I found out just now.
You can use Yamb or Quicktime to change the MOV container to MP4. However it gets complicated when the audio is in 5.1. ![]() This is what I found out with both Yamb and QT. With Yamb, if the audio is in 5.1, the conversion will yield no audio. With QT, the exporting will only allow stereo conversion. So here's your homework those who own PS3s: figure out if using MP4 files the PS3 can decode the 5.1 if you output as LPCM via HDMI AND if it can pass through 5.1 via optical if the audio is transcoded to Dolby Digital if the source is MP4. fuad |

I chose 1080p for a 1080p trailer, and specified the max bit rate, but it still shrunk the file size considerably. So it looks like it is compressing it, or is there some way around that?

I specified the bitrate also but it does go back to a preset rate. I don't think theres anyway around that. If anyone finds a way, pls post here.

I then tried on another (the 1080p Grindhouse trailer) and got an "Error importing: [filename]:IsoMedia" in the Yamb log. Are there some move files that are incompatible with Yamb or am I missing something? |

Wow I just re-read the OP's original post and I'm trying Yamb as I type. So far so good.

Bottom line is Yamb is not perfect and neither is QT. Like I said, I need to know if the MP4 format can do 5.1 and if so what format is should be in: Dolby Digital or AAC? Then I need to figure out if the PS3 can decode 5.1 AAC. And if it can passthrough the DD 5.1 in an MP4 file so that people can use the optical out. Finally, need to figure out which software can rip AAC or transcode AAC to DD so that I can mux it back to the original video file. The trailer for Harry Potter is not as good. Posterization is visible. fuad |

No PS3 owners using optical digital out knows if the trailers are being output as LPCM or Dolby Digital?

In my unprofessional opinion, the audio tracks on the trailer are 2 channel stereo.

Trailers are being output as Stereo AAC i believe. My receiver only outputs it to Pro-Logic which it does by default it the sound is stereo. They do this to have a slightly smaller file size.
