MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sigma Designs (Nasdaq:SIGM), a leading provider of highly integrated systems-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions, today announced that its highly integrated SMP8634 media processor was selected by Sharp Corporation to power its new line of AQUOS® Blu-ray disc players and recorders. Sharp’s new products include the BD-AV1 and AV10 Series for the Japanese market and the recently introduced slim-profile AQUOS BD player, model BD-HP20U, the company’s first offering in the U.S. market.

Blu-ray (Blu-ray Disc or BD) is a leading standard in the market for next-generation, high-definition optical players, which is based on blue laser disc technology. Blu-ray offers consumers the highest quality viewing experience which includes high definition video at 1080p resolution, picture-in-picture video, high definition multi-channel audio, 3D style graphics and enhanced interactive features such as real time director's comments, pop-up menus, and more.

AQUOS also offers full compatibility with 24 movie frames per second playback, matching the native filming format for most movies as well as HDMI output support of 1080/24p video and Dolby TrueHD, and an i.LINK™ (IEEE1394) input for connecting to a Sharp AQUOS High-Vision recorder.

You know some people in North America (and I'm sure Europe too) wouldn't mind having a BD recorder.. don't see why they all have to be exclusive to Japan (although I understand you practically can't sell a DVD or BD player there unless it's a recorder or a game console).

Yep. I'd love to have something that can attach to the PS3 for archiving etc...or a PS3 down the road that has recording built-in.

No, the BDP20 is a Profile 1.0 player. Sorry to dissapoint. It DOES have great picture quality and seems to boot a bit faster than competing models. Right now the MSRP is $399, and it was competing very well with the Samsung BDP-1400 before the price drop. Other than that, it is a solid performer with nothing really outstanding to set it apart.

No they use one they made. But it is the same one that is in the Samsung 1400.
