Default Sony BDP-301 with latest 3.30 Firmware

Just picked up one of these last night.. from Costco for $279

I will update the firmware tonight if I get a chance... I don't even know what version it is on now

Quick Question.. Cos really other than playing a couple of scenes of different movies last night, I've not had much of a chance to do anything else.

Has this firmware helped with the speed of the unit? My first impression was it was VERY SLUGGISH.

Will this firmware allow you to restart from the same point if you switch the unit off?

Are either of the above possible with future firmware updates or is what I have now as good as it gets with this unit?

The more updates your system gets, the more features it will receive.

With the update I received a couple days ago, I'm pretty sure you'll receive the similar features as the PS3

It does improve the "sluggishness" of the unit, but it will always be slow when compared to a conventional DVD player.

The S301 has 7.1 surround sound compared to the 5.1 surround sound of the S300, so the firmware should have similar results.

With 3.30 firmware my S300 fully warms up in 45 seconds and loads POTC in under 2 minutes, compared to about 4 minutes with 2.0 firmware. POTC makes for a great test bed because it is probably the worst loading BD-J movie I can think of. Other movies have similar load times, but when I want to test new firmware, POTC is the first movie I grab.

According to Sony the only difference in the 300 and 301 is the inclusion of the HDMI cable.

Where did you get your information?

On this site. Seems pretty oddball to have a model number based on something as simple as cable. That isn't a feature!

I was told the 301 is a derivative for Costco only.

That's correct. It's too deferentiate for sales tracking purposes.

The only difference between the 300 and 301 is that the 301 includes an HDMI cable.

By the way....I was at Costco Chantilly, VA last night and when I walked in the door I saw only two 301's left on the pallet.....by the time I circled around and came back they were gone!

They easily sold the ten or twelve they had in stock within two days. Only saw one Samsung 1400 at the same price go in those two days.

Default 3.7 update is up for the S300 and S301

I saw this morning that firmware update 3.7 for the S300 and S301 is up on the Sony site, which is the latest update.

I just got mine S301 from Bjs for $279 and was wondering about it myself about the differences between the two models. So they already have 3.7? gotta check that out. Hope they link it on this site.

Welcome to Blu and the forum. Most of these firmware updates will just help to make your player run smoother like shorter load times (BD-J).

I just updated my S300 from 3.3 to 3.7 and the one disk I had issues with is now working fine. I don't think this update included any new features just better Java support.

Firmware usually fixes the problem that people have in the past on certain disc or ready for future releases.

The past 3 updates have involved java. But I did notice improved load times on POTC 1. About 18 seconds faster.

Perhaps the other updates we want will come after they nail down the Java issues.
