not likely. the film is decades old and the latest Criterion edition release was an improvement over the previous DVD releases but the old Japanese film stock were very poor. I doubt if transferred to high definition will show much improvement in the film quality.

I think that even if Seven Samurai did go Blu-ray it needs to keep it's popping, crackling sound and grainy texture, the age of the film and the way it's shot are what makes it a masterpiece. Well that and of course Kurosawa was one of the greatest directors of all time.

Restoring it is important. But I do not think they can ever remove all those defects from age. Pops and snaps might still be there, but I think in HD, I want to see it as good as they can make it.
I love this film, and hope to add this to my Blu-ray collection soon. |
