Default Which receiver will give me Dolby TrueHD, DTS-MA, and Uncompressed audio?

Looking into upgrading my receiver here very shortly and was wondering if anyone had a recommendation. I would like to find a receiver that can decode all of the next gen audio codecs as well as having HDMI 1.3 w/3 outputs. I can live with 2 outputs I supposes but 3 would make my life a whole lot easier. I was looking at I believe the Denon 888 and 988 as an example of my price range. Any help would be great!

Don't you mean 3 HDMI inputs? Check out the new Onkyo TX-SR605 and up models, and the new Yamaha RX-V1800 and up receivers, the lower end Onkyos have 2 HDMI 1.3 inputs, and the Yammy 1800 and up have 4 HDMI 1.3 inputs. Even if you only get 2 HDMI inputs, you can always add an HDMI switcher and get as many ports as you need.

Yeah, I was trying to avoid buying a switcher if I could as a decent quality 1.3 is quite a bit of coin.

Ha I totally forgot to look at monoprice. I'm not sure that I can wait that long though. I'm in Canada and shipping around Christmas would take far too long.

Also, does toslink have enough bandwidth to transmit the advanced codecs via bitstream or is HDMI the only way? I've gotten conflicting answers on this in the past.

HDMI only for full HD Audio.
Only 2ch PCM over coax or toslink.
(regular DD and DTS 5.1 are fine over coax or toslink)

I have the Onkyo TX-SR705. It has 3 HDMI ins, 1 out, and supports all codecs out there right now. I absolutely love it.

Yep, that is the receiver I have and does a bang up job. Love it.

Please note though that there is a more important question you might want to ask.

Does my blu-ray player output lossless bitstream?

I will slowly compile a list of new players here that output lossless bitstream. All these players listed below allow your 705 receiver to decode HD audio formats (True HD and DTS HD MA), when the user sets these players output to "bitstream" you will see the appropriate decoding DSP display on the front of your receiver saying either True HD or DTS HD MA.

If you know of a new player coming out that isn't on this list that will support lossless bitstream please let me know i will add it to the list and give you credit for it in contributions section. Thanks In Advance!

Players that support lossless bitstream:
Samsung BD-UP5000 [Blu Ray & HD DVD] (Not yet released)
Samsung BDP-1400 [Blu Ray]
Panasonic DMP-BD30 [Blu Ray]
Toshiba A35 [HD DVD]
Toshiba XA2 [HD DVD] (Only if you have firmware v2.7 or higher)

If your player is NOT on this list, then your player does not support lossless bitstream.
For these users who do not have a lossless bitstream player keep your player set to Linear PCM output when playing (Blu Ray or HD DVD movies). This allows those formats to decode in your player and be sent as lossless PCM to your receiver. You get the same benefit as the lossless bitstream crowd if you do!

The following only applies to people who DO NOT have a lossless bitstream player:

There is only 2 instances when you want to turn off PCM and switch to your lossy bitstream output setting.
A) If you are playing older Standard Definition (SD) movies, it still gives you a benefit of setting your player to bitstream so you gain ability to decode Dolby Digital and DTS on your receiver.
B) Depending on your player type it may not support certain HD audio formats (ex. DTS HD MA or True HD) and in those instances the player replaces that audio with a lossy core track instead of the HD audio track. Because of this, it that may sound better by setting your player to lossy bitstream.

With regards to PCM and TrueHD, great. Unfortunately is doesn't support DTS-HDMA yet. Some claim it will be out before years end, some claim before the end of 1 qtr '08, and some claim never.

I have Sony STR-DA5300ES. The STR-DA4300ES will also work. The 5300ES has 6 HDMI inputs/1 output, and 4300ES has 4/1. They both are HDMI 1.3.

Thanks for the input everyone. Right now I'm leaning towards the Onkyo 705. Are there any receivers that have 2 HMDI OUTS? I have not found one yet and I realize this is rather odd. I have a unique setup that would benefit greatly from having two outs. Any ideas?

The Denon AVR4308 has 4 in / 2 out, but its a bit pricey ($2500), Great receiver, though

I need everyone's opinion on whether I should buy a soundbar or a traditional surround system. Which one is better and why? And keep the answers simple because I don't much about audio systems. I currently have a 32" Sharp Aquos 1080p and a PS3. Which audio system would fit best for those two?
