Did you keep your PS3 in a well ventilated area? it might have over heated.

yes call sony if its under a year tell them the update messed up your PS3 and they should replace it asap.

If it happened directly after the update, then obviously the update didn't work properly. Either that or the video processor in the ps3 has gone.

I would agree. They warn you not to turn off your PS3 during the down-load. I am not saying you did, but did the down-load complete and then restart on it's own?

Did you turn your system completely off (on the back of the unit?) and restart?

A worse question, did you smell any type of smoke when you turned it back on or hear a pop?

Best thing to do is call Sony and have them walk you thru some options, but you have received some really good tips already from members here.

Good luck with this.

The first PS3 I brought home powered down during initial set up... and I was left with a system that beeped 3 times when I turned it on, then proceeded to shut itself off within seconds.

The only major flaw I can find with the PS3 is its vulnerability to go tits up during hard drive access. I PRAY that I'm never confronted with a power outage while saving a game or updating firmware.

Another question are you running this thru a receiver? or direct into a TV? That could be part of the issue and depending on your answer I could have another solution or answer.

It's plugged directly into the tv.

When you pressed and held the power button, did you do it during shut down or start up. I'm pretty sure you have to press and hold during start up to reset the video settings. Just asking to make sure there is no confusion.

WOW. Well, since you have it plugged directly into the TV, that shot my other options/solutions for your problem. I see that someone just asked you to double check your settings on your tv. So did you turn off the master power switch as I had suggested and I take it that did nothing for you? One more question, when you turn the power on the unit, do you hear the fan running? does the green power light come on? And a really dumb question on my part, did you check the channel you were running this on your tv? usually you have multiple channels you can run various options on (depending on the make and year of your tv). Mine for instance has 4 options + 2 cable selections to choose from. Have you run thru your options to see if it pops up?

Default I have NOT tried this

** force the game-os to boot **

To force the PS3 to boot into the game-os, shutdown the PS3, then press and
hold the power button on the front of the system until a beep is heard, then
release the power button. The video mode and boot flag settings will be re-set
to the defaults and the game-os will boot.

Maybe???

This happened to me as well...the whole "No picture but audio yes" thing. I was connecting it to the TV directly with HDMI and it wouldn't work. I tried re-setting it, unplugging it, flipping the power switch, everything. Then i tried it on another TV and ran it through my Onkyo receiver via HDMI and did a reset by holding the power button for 3 seconds when it turns on and it worked! I had picture! Then I brought it back downstairs and it worked perfectly! I am blaming it on a DirecTV HDMI cable I was using to hook it up to the TV originally. When I switched HDMI cables everything worked fine.

My advice is try using a different HDMI cable.

Is there still no video and no sound or no video only?

Do the controllers work? I mean do they sync up?

Question

I also recently updated my firmware on my PS3 and now it seems to "lock up" and freeze on me in the middle of games or movies. It does not freeze at the same point every time, in either case, so i am assuming that it is not the disc and that there was something up with the firmware. This problem only started right after i updated my firmware. Anyone else had this problem?
