I'll at least post one of my thoughts since someone above said it might be picked up by a "real" member and posted as a thread (but I don't want to be a member of any forum that doesn't welcome me).
Here's the thought -- last night I used my two-day old PS3 to play a "normal" DVD and was amazed at the quality. I already had an upsampled DVD player, but this quality (on my 9 foot projection screen) was so much better that I wished I had known this or I would have jumped at buying a PS3 long before this. I wanted to know if anyone else had noticed this or perhaps this was just due to the size of my screen that made it apparent. It's clearly one more reason to buy a PS3 (and go blu). the forum...it is a great place to ask questions and for techno-phobes like me, it has been a great place to learn. Last edited by Deciazulado; 12-23-2007 at 12:50 AM. Reason: splitted and moved here (see Spike's post below) |

I'm starting this thread for a new member while he waits for his 14-day trial period to end. Here's his original post:

Need to know what DVD player they were using.
Most upsampling DVD players to a lousy job. Now if he had an Oppo, I would perk up and listen. If it was a mainstream upsampling player, I'm not surprised. |

while the PS3 does do a decent job upscaling, it is not the best. It adds a bit of edge enhancement and some video noise which can be bothersome on certain movies. I also have a Denon DVD-3930CI (admittedly at $1500) which uses the Realta HQV processor. I find the upscaling on the Denon to be superior over the PS3. Not a big difference, but enuff to be noticeable. I also find the PS3 to upscale better than the Sony ES DVD players (3100/9100 models)

This (the "old" DVD player) was a Sony 5 disc player. Honestly, I thought it did a terrific job... until I saw what the PS3 did.
Now, I wouldn't have bought the PS3 solely on the basis of playing regular DVDs, but this was a very welcomed bonus. I was going to keep the 5 disc player hooked in via component (I had it hooked in HDMI but of course that input is now the PS3) just to play regular DVDs because I had heard somewhere that the PS3 might have troubles with them, but after seeing the quality I'm rethinking that position. But better than that is I can recommend getting the PS3 to my friends even on the basis of it being a better DVD player than they already have, assuming they have an HDTV. This is good because a lot of them are fence sitting right now (I'm an old guy -- over 55 -- who lives in an adult community and while we have lots of disposable income we tend not to be early adopters. They are all looking at me to see which way to go and up until now I've been telling them to wait). So for all of you blu folk this may result in a whole lot more purchases real soon now (I run a Florida retirement forum and thus have a fairly wide audience -- a thread is going up there tomorrow about my thoughts on the PS3). |

I do appreciate you starting that thread (which I then added to). Thanks.
And to jaymzbo -- glad you noticed. The first thing I did was to get the latest firmware update for the PS3. But I never had a clue it would play my "normal" DVDs so well. Last edited by Deciazulado; 12-23-2007 at 12:53 AM. Reason: splitted and moved here (see Spike's post above) |

When I first got my PS3 I played around a bit with the settings and ran my own little test. I used The Prestige to compare my upconverting DVD player, PS3 upconversion, and blu-ray.
I'll keep it short to say, I no longer have the DVD player hooked up to the tv at all, and own The Prestige on Blu-Ray as well as SD. The PS3 does so many things so well, and is so future proof that I don't know why Sony doesn't concentrate *almost* solely on it vs stand-alone players... |
