Why not still consider the PS3? You get a machine that does infinitely more than any BD player, it's much quicker on load times, it has internet browsing on the big screen... and, obviously you are a gamer from the list including the Xbox360. Why not have the best of both worlds at your disposal for gaming? You'll be missing out on the next generation of gaming when companies start focusing on the PS3 as the more viable content solution to their ever evolving industry.
It may be a bit bigger, but it looks fantastic on a rack!!! |

Anyway, The BD30 seems to be the Stand Alone player of choice... I personally think the PS3 is your best bet. The built-in wifi and bluetooth are a dream and firmware upgrades allow the machine to grow as the format does, basically future proofing it. This would be particularly true for the audio codecs. I think it has some hope as a media center, but only time will tell. The fact that you game some, should make it an easier decision to get the PS3. I placed my PS3 upright next to my tv on the stand and its very unobtrusive. I wasn't expecting it to be so large when i bought it, but now I'm used to it. Also, I think someone said this earlier, you can get an IR transmitter for $20 at amazon that will let you use your Harmony remote. |

If you want all bells and wistle with you're 605, get the Pana. All Title Works, it'S 1080p /24fps, it bitstream all next gen codec to you,re 605, it's compatible Profile 1.1 (PIP, coming from HD DVD you know what it is), it's IR, it's Silent and it's in a AVR Form, and it doesn't eat 140W (AVG of the 40gig model, more with the 80 and 60) of power while watching a movie (Panasonic eat 25W when playing a BD)

LOL. Damn.
I leave for a few hours to look at some of my options and my reputation is on the line. LOL. The fact of the matter is that I am indeed a Microsoft employee and I have worked for the company for a good eight years, and I know there are some consiperacy theorists that believe M$/Tosh/Intel are trying to buy out the industry, but the fact is that I simply found myself loving High-Definition more than I cared about what particular camp I was in. (HD-DVD). Over the last several months I've seen releases come out on Blu-Ray that I really wanted to enjoy, but obviously couldn't. At this point, I really think this could be anyone's war to win, but I have been an early adopter for quite a while and every day that I'm on the fence, is a day that I'm not enjoying HD. So it's been a difficult decision, especially taking off my M$ Fanboi hat and potentially looking at a PS3. However, at the end of the day I just realized I love the technology more than I do anything else. Also it's good to know what our competition is doing with the PS3. I do appreciate everyone's opinions, I have 1 HDMI input left and it has someone's name on it, just not sure who. ![]() |

Well, from one of the curious, thank you for filling us in. I don't think there was more than one of us (if that) that was truly questioning your "loyalties" so-to-speak, just many of us curious how you went to being very pro-HD DVD to considering joining the Blu camp. Turns out it's pretty much for the same reason that many here broke down and bought one of the cheap HD DVD players when they went on sale.
You're a fan of Hi-def, and you're willing to give Blu-ray a fair chance to show its strengths. That makes you top-notch in my book. Again, welcome back to the forum, and I think it's safe to say that many of us are looking forward to hearing about your experience with Blu-ray. Let us know how it goes! |
