Underrated & Overrated Games of '07

I'm sticking to just games available on the PS3 so this doesn't become a flame war of PS3 vs 360.

Most Overrated: COD4 - It's good, much better than COD3, which I honestly thought was clunky and awful. However it's not revolutionary in any sense. It really feels like just another FPS and I really am not in love with the controls. I mean, check my sig... I do like it a lot... but 10/10 game of the year? Not quite. I actually enjoy the shooting in Uncharted better; COD4 feels chaotic and disjointed a lot of the time.

Most Underrated: Uncharted - Nothing wrong w/ 8/10 average rating, but if these FPS retreads are 10/10 then come on. The game looks great and has variety of play. Oh, and the characters actually are interesting and you somewhat care about them in the story... COD4, not so much.

Way Better Than Everyone Said: Lair - Maybe not the most underrated, but what were people smoking? Are the controls really that tough for you, because my 9-year-old son coasts through Lair w/o issue. It looks great and the idea is totally novel. Admit it, these fans and critics always SAY they want tougher & more unique games, but they actually just want more of the same so they can feel like great, hardcore gamers. Looks great and the controls DO work.

My biggest complaints about Lair are not the controls but the display.

I have to play it in a completely dark room at night if I want to see any detail. This isn't just my display either, because I asked about it and other people had the same complaint.

Uncharted is definitely amazing

I haven't played COD4, I don't like FPS on consoles.

UT3 Underrated

COD 4--is right on I liked COD 4----Campaign is short, but on-line is fun


WARHAWK-- The most UNDERRATED game. Warhawk is so much fun!!!

I think COD4 is good, very good but it's got a short single player campaign & the online on the PS3 could have done with a lobby system like RFOM & somthing to stop that bloody awful "Host ended game" messages that shouldn't pop up at all, for those reasons i think it is about 9.5 as even though single player campaign is on the short side, the fact it was all put together very well is the reason i didn't knock it to 9

Uncharted i think probably deserves nothing below 9 even though i haven't played it & only read peoples opinions

I think LAIR got a really big flaming but critics may have gone overly harsh on it, but i haven't played it so again, cannot comment

Overall i'd actually think COD4 wasn't actually over rated as much as you think but perhaps other PS3 titles were more under rated than they should have

Formula 1 is totaly under rated.

It's the best F1 game ever as far as graphics & physics.

it depends on what angle you are taking. Uncharted was quite underrated in the general gaming community, but highly acclaimed within the circle of PS3 gamers. we all know how awesome it is, but it doesn't get the props it deserves because it is a PS3 exclusive. so with that being said, i am going to approach this topic from the outside as a general gamer.

most overrated: COD4...great game but not groundbreaking or knocking my socks off like most claim.

most underrated: Warhawk...now this is groundbreaking. was given mediocre reviews, and some just plain bad. we all know it is fantastic, but most gamers have never played it and are missing out. imagine if this was an XBox 360 exclusive? it would have scored A+ and 100's across the board.

overlooked gem: DiRT...beautiful visuals and intense racing, but nobody ever talks about it. it was left out in the cold.

Uncharted was fun until a can of bizzarre was opened. I thoroughly enjoy CoD4 and UT3

overrated - halo 3 (360) and oblivion (ps3). yeah, i said it, oblivion is overrated. yeah its massive and has a bunch of hours of gameplay, and a good story, but come on people. a lot of the missions are very, very repititve and similar, the motions are aboslutely 100% god awful. I run sidways down a hill where my foot keeps going into the ground. that bumps it down to at least an 8/10, i don't know why people gave this game of the year for the xbox last year (oh yeah, i do the xbox had no good games in its first year, just like the ps3 didn't) (i also just want to say i completely 100% disagree with the OP about COD4, in my opionion COD4 was the first fps console game to truly get down the chaos that is war, which IMO adds a new level of realism to gaming and is a slight revolution in console gaming)

underrated - drake's fortune, warhawk and UT3 for various reasons. all are amazing, but got avg. reviews.

needs to get talked about more - ratchet and clank, i have not had this much fun with a game in years

Best Graphics: COD 4 (unless GT5 Prologue counts)

Best PSN Title: High Velocity Bowling

MOST OVERRATED: GUITAR HERO 3. I'm sorry but Rock Band completely blows this game away! I know over the last few years GH has built itself a nice reputation and will always sell on name alone. However GH is starting to simply rehash without anything really new to add to the gameplay. However the reviews never seem to reflect this for the game.The new gameplay elements in Rock Band make GH3 obsolete IMO.

Honorable Mention: Assassin's Creed

MOST UNDERRATED: UNCHARTED. Amazing game! In my opinion this game has it all! Graphics, gameplay, physics, story, etc. There really is no reason for this title not to sell better than it has! My only knock with the game is that it's a tad too short. A longer adventure or some kind of multiplayer option would've done this game wonders. Still, if you have a PS3 there's no reason not to own this title!

Honorable Mention: Ratchet and Clank: Future Tools of Destruction

WAY BETTER THAN EVERYONE SAID: Half Life: Orange Box. Yes yes, there's no disputing the fact that the 360 version of this game runs smoother with less hiccups. However this title is NOT unplayable like some suggest! It still runs way better than it ever did on my PC and I enjoy it quite a bit!

Honorable Mention: Ghost Recon: Advanced War 2.


BEST GAMES FOR PS3 2007: Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, COD 4, Rock Band, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Unreal 3, & High Velocity Bowling.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENTS FOR PS3 2007: Lair, Assassin's Creed, Madden 08, & Guitar Hero 3.

Drake's DEFINITELY most underrated. Gamespot gave it an 8 out of 10, while they give halo 3 a 9.5?? riiiiiight. Even PLAYSTATION MAGAZINE gave Drake's mediocre marks, saying that there was "too much shooting toward the end"...waaaaah maybe he should have bought a barbie game on PS1?, i don't know who wrote that at PS magazine but I hope they're fired now.

You sir, get post of the week. I completely agree. COD4 is awesome though. I really got burned out of FPS a decade back with Quake, but COD4 has mind blowing graphics and the different asides (like bomber runs, etc.) make it pretty unique.

Uncharted is just a beautiful game with no apparent faults, other than what is attached to any game in that genre. A definite 9/10. Lair is a 7.5/10. The controls were a little wonky with the 180 degree flip/shift, but overall it is really a good game that only needed a little more tweaking to become an awesome game.

look at the rankings, rock band scored a lot better in reviews that GH3. so i don't know if you can call GH3 overrated. i would use the term overhyped instead.

Thanks. As you seem to have noticed, I wasn't trying to say that Lair is great, but it's so much better than the lowly ratings it received. Someone has to give points for trying something different.

I thought the reviews were pretty high for both games. However I was speaking more in terms of sales and hype.
