French SDH subs to be mandatory from 2011 onwards?

I read on this page of the Gaumont thread at CriterionForum that apparently, from 2011 onwards, French SDH subtitles are now legally mandatory on all commercial releases. Can anyone confirm this? If so, it is excellent news!

Is is indeed.

It has been made compulsory by government, for enhancing the accessibility of movies to HoH people in France.

So far, very few french movies had any french subs. In fact, it was even worse : some french movies had... english subs but no french subs.

That's good to hear, but I do wish they would use a single color for SDH subs...I've seen a few French releases already where the SDH subs are multi-colored (!) for reasons I don't totally understand, and if I had to use them I would be afraid that they would be very distracting.

They are colored because there are regular subtitles and SDH subtitles. The different colors are typically for the SDH subtitles to differentiate when different characters speak, you have noises, etc. It helps the hearing impaired to follow what takes place on the screen even better

So, they have found that using different colors is preferable to identifying the speaker in capital letters or in brackets, as the SDH subs on US and UK releases do?

At least on the ones that I have in my collection and I have played around with them, this appears to be the case - they drop the constant descriptions. I think that back in the days there were also quite a few opera SDVDs that were like that.

TF1 love these types of colored subs.

In fact, it is standardised. White is for people talking while on screen, yellow for off screen, red is for ambient sounds, green for foreign dialect that protagonists don't understand, etc.

It may be that way because in France, everything is more complicated than it should be. We don't have the same pragmatic way of thinking that English or American people have.

In one hand, the subtitles are multi-colored here but in another hand, there are very few discs (DVDs or BDs) which contain SDH subtitles, so it's not very useful...
In the US, SDH subtitles are simpler but there are avalaible on virtually evry disc, which makes it more convenient for hard of hearing people.
