Default what H.264 codec will Blu-ray use?

There are already many variants on the H.264 codec:

# Mpegable AVC Codec
# Moonlight H.264 Video Codec
# MainConcept H.264 Codec
# Fraunhofer IIS Codec
# Ateme MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 Codec
# Videosoft H.264 Codec

These are the ones I found...

What H.264 will it actually use?

Does any of these codecs support the specific tools defined in FRExt Amendment? I haven't found any sotware encoder / decoder that supports High Profile (excepting, naturally, JVT reference software).

Does anybody know...?

If have not tried all the codecs you mention in your first post. Anyway, I suppose that H.264 video will comply ITU-T H.264 recommendation at some specific profile/level. Any compliant encoder could be used. And any H.264 decoder should be able to decode the video (which is something that does not happen today, unfortunately).

As for encoders and tools, Moonlight does not support high profile. Neither does x264 (the free encoder embedded on Video Lan VLC media player). As a matter of fact, I have not heard of any H.264 encoder (or decoder) which is prepared to work properly with H.264 HD encoding profiles. So there is still a long way to Blu-Ray efficient and high-quality video content, I am afraid.

Regards,

Pablo

Default H.264: encoders and bitrates and....

yeah...

because I would like to know what encoder to use to encode all my video content in the H.264 codec used with BDs

as double layer BDs will be able to record 4 hours of video content using MPEG-2... just imagine how many hours you will be able to record using a H.264 codec...

I still have questions what codec and what bitrate the BD will use @ what resolution... :?

Like Pablo mentioned, BluRay is going to use a standard codec: H.264 High Profile. That means any encoder that produces a H.264 HP compatible stream can be used to make BD movies.

NeroDigital is one of them. As far as I know, this is going to be one of the first H.264 HP encoders to come out. I just don't know if it is going to be professional enough to be used by the release companies.

Yes, but...

Mmm

Are the ones I mentioned above not High Profile compatible?
I just want to code every video file I got into H.264
so I can burn them *soon* on a BD

You can encode to H.264, there is even a free codec called x264 that can do it for you. But they all produce MP streams (which I believe will play on both HD-DVD and BD). High Profile codecs are still under development and as far as I know, all of them will be paid.
