Default h.264 .mkv files, can they play ob blu ray players?

i was wondering if i can play an h.264 .mkv file on a blu ray player. it says under the specs for most players that it can handle h.264, but what about .mkv?

Not natively. They must be converted to be playable.

just convert it. you can use gotsent , decent free program.

If you can get your hands on a current edition of xilisoft video converter, it's the best program for the job. I have a terabyte external hardrive full of movies i've converted with xilisoft

Ditto to that. Fantastic program! Fast, efficient, and fully PS3-compliant every single time. I also like that it will retain the 5.1 track if it's Dolby and if it's DTS, it will convert it to a readable 5.1 Dolby track...really nice program, I must say. It won't leave DTS tracks untouched, but other than that, I have never had an issue with it.

+1 and the reason it is quick is because only the container is being changed not the codec. a container like .vob, .mp4 or .avi will work in the ps3.
