Default Amazon BOGOF import duties to the UK......

Will Amazon put the total value of both disks on the packaging ?? If so I'd stung by high import duties.

Check out a thread I started as I have had the same problems. Amazon sent me an email explaining why they do it. It really is a pain as Amazon's BOGOF's are so good!!!!

Hi,

As the others have said they do put the total of all the blu rays on the packaging slip. However, you might not have to pay any tax on the package, i have received 7 packages of blu rays from Amazon.com in the last two months and have not paid duty on any.

Rich

Customs duty.

Customs duty is a tax on imports for which goods coming into the UK from non-EU countries are eligible. You'll only be charged this if the tax calculated comes to over £7. The amount of the duty depends on the category of goods; some electrical items, for example, digital cameras, laptops, mobiles and games consoles like Wii/ Xbox360 are duty free. A full categorised list is available at HMRC site.

For expensive items, get an estimate of customs prices by calling HM Revenue & Customs’ National Advice Service directly on 0845 010 9000 or, if calling from abroad, +44 (0) 208 929 0152.

Import VAT on goods over £18.

Separate to customs duty you’ll also need to cough up 17.5% on goods costing £18 and more (including shipping charges), or if you can prove the item’s a gift, the threshold's £36. It’s important to understand the VAT is on the full amount, not just the excess over the limit.

HMRC deems it a gift if: it's from an individual to an individual, is for the private use of you or your family, there is no commercial or trade element and the gift has not been paid for either directly or indirectly.

Customs clearance charges.

When shopping online from the UK, if there are duty and/or VAT charges, the delivery company will pay this on your behalf and reclaim the funds from you before delivering your parcel, plus charge a handling fee on top. Fees vary depending on the company; but usually are between £8 and £14. These can be charged at a later date so watch out and be careful

DVD's are charged @ 3.5% Duty then 17.5% tax ...

........................

But as Ive said Ive never been charged...

even if i do get the odd one charged the savings ive had outway it

That is exactly what they do

I have not yet tried sending them as a "gift" to someone else, so increasing the customs limit. The big sting in the tail is the Royal mail clearance fee of £8.00. Last time I paid £12.50 in customs of which £8.00 was just the clearance fee.

As a big business like Amazon, they have to declare the value of good properly.

It is always a contention between price you paid versus the value (for insurance purposes). I don't know how UK works but in theory, you should be able to bring your actual receipt for rebate if the duties are charged wrong, it just takes time.

In Canada, depending on the carrier, some charge brokerage fee on top of the taxes / duties and it stings.

Also worth remembering

Never pay in pounds when abroad/on an overseas website.

If you're buying from a US site that offers you the option of converting to pounds, don't bother. This means you’re dependent on the exchange rate it gives you, which is normally poor as they make an extra cut of the currency conversion. So provided you’ve got a good card, simply pay in dollars and you know you’re getting the best rate.

I also buy of US sellers on amazon.co.uk most are under £10 and postage is only £1.30
