Blame Rupert Murdoch, he's the one that owns fox and they cancelled it. Joss Whedon loved the show so much, it is part of the reason we have the movie "Serenity".

What killed the show was the fact that it aired out of order!! This BD was a blind buy for me and luckily, this BD had the episodes in CORRECT order. So, I got to watch them for the first time in order. It's very important to watch these in proper order so you can fully understand what the heck is going on. I can't believe Fox aired them out of order. What were they thinking? Viewers were probably all confused while watching and that's why ratings dropped!

Noticed its down to $23.49 on Amazon (for UK importers £19.14 inc postage), not bad at all.

The problem with the show was that the show was never that popular with Fox Executives and the floating rumor was that the show was replaced even before it aired. Over the years, I had heard reports that the ratings on the series weren't all that high for this new show and given the added fact that the series was aired out of order (the second episode in the series was broadcast first as the unofficial pilot) and that the pilot episode didn't air until several weeks later. Not to mention the fact that some episodes of Firefly weren't even broadcast at all.

It wasn't until Firefly was released to DVD that Firefly had become a cult classic, much in the same way that Star Trek (The Original Series) became an instant hit, a cult classic, after it was canceled by NBC. It wasn't until Firefly was released on DVD that Fox Studios began to realize that they had made a mistake.

When Universal Studios greenlighted "Serenity", the major motion picture, it was hoped that the movie would launch a new movie series for Universal. The problem with Serenity was the same problem that 20th Century Fox had with Firefly, the fans just didn't support it. Serenity, while it bombed at the box office, became a major hit for Universal Studios when it was released to DVD.

There has been discussion about releasing more Firefly or more Serenity movies directly to DVD and Blu-ray but has been met with skepticism by series creator, Josh Whedon.

I doubt very much this will ever happen. I thin Serenity gave us a nice ending to the series and that will be all we will have. It's been almost a decade now, the actors have moved on and they are doing other stuff. Nathan Fillion as a good show with Castle on ABC. Firefly was something that was never given much chance and it's over now. We have 14 episodes and one movie to enjoy at least.

Out of topic, anyone remember Nathan Fillion in Saving Private Ryan?

Maybe Serenity bombed in the US box office, since the fans over there never seem to be able to support anything for longer than 5 minutes. (Thanks for getting SGU and TSCC cancelled by the way, Statesiders!) But in the UK, Serenity topped Pride and Prejudice to be the no. 1 movie at the box office, which was very impressive.

TiVo and Blu-ray sales don't count for ratings, and many people have busy lives.

Yeah! He played "James Frederick Ryan, Minnesota!" Nice comic relief in a really intense (GREAT) movie.

Fox never supported this show from the beginning, it was never promoted, and was stuck in a Friday night timeslot. I would have watched this on TV if I had heard of it but the first I ever heard of this show was when it came out on DVD. I was hooked from episode I (and by that I mean the REAL episode I, Serenity Parts I & II, not The Train Job)

Your accusations are misplaced. Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis were supported in the United States by fans of both shows. Stargate Atlantis was canceled in favor of Stargate Universe and that upset a lot of fans.

When Stargate Universe was released, producers tried to "reboot" the franchise along the same lines as how they rebooted Battlestar Galactica and fans here in the states had enough of that. We weren't talking about a series that was created 30 or 40 years ago but a recent series that was still followed by sci-fi fans and Stargate fans alike.

Stargate Universe failed to catch on because the producers wanted to re-invent the Stargate "universe". I loved the original Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis but while I tried to watch Stargate Universe, but it was too boring, too long and made absolutely no sense.

SGU was cardboard acting at its finest. With 2-dimensional characters who showed no depth ... it's no wonder why American fans criticized this show. It's also the same reason by "Caprica" was canceled.

The producers tried to reinvent the franchise that established these long running shows and they failed miserably. When something isn't broke, you don't try to fix it, and that's what the producers for SGU and for Caprica tried to do. SGU wasn't Stargate and fans retaliated against the show.

That's funny, because to me that's completely backwards, and the reason why I could never gather any interest in the Stargate franchise, which was too cartoony and humorous to my tastes and 2-dimensional, while I got hooked up onto Stargate Universe and, to a lesser extent, Caprica (I followed Battlestar Galactica to the end, but I was let down by the "mystical", religious cop-out and the overall militaristic tone).

With you on this one. SG-1 seems so dated to me, re-watching it now. SG:A is still watchable but SGU was gripping and I don't see how any of the characters were 2D, kemcha? I really hope you're not referring to Rob Carlyle in anyway. I thought he was a great character and plays the guy you love to hate so well. Very disappointed that another great sci-fi show has been cancelled but that's what happens when you depend on US ratings.

Maybe that's because they killed two of the best characters.

I'm not saying that SGU wasn't worth saving, only that the producers made a mistake by trying to reinvent the Stargate franchise. The producers should have simply retooled SGU by settling the crew of the Destiny on a planet as a base of operations, along with the Stargate and went that route.

Far as the 2-dimensional characters goes, the few episodes I watched, and they were episodes in the first and in the second season, the acting just seemed too cardboard. I remember when SGU was first advertised that it was hyped that Lou Diamond Phillips would headline the show, and many of thought as the de-facto leader of the new Stargate team. However, Lou Diamond Phillips was relegated to a backup sometimes recurring cast member of the series.

The problem with the series stemmed from Robert Carlysle's acting. I don't know, his acting just seemed to stiff and he wasn't very believable. When Stargate SG1 debuted, everybody was already familiar with Richard Dean Anderson and the rest of the cast for SG1 were pretty good actors and actresses. Then, when Stargate Atlantis came around, they were relatively unknown actors but had some likeability as their characters grew on you. But, SGU seemed to take a big departure from that.

The producers departed from the established feel of Stargate SG1 and Atlantis and decided to go a different route by trying to reinvent the Stargate franchise by trying to copy the forumula that made the reinvented Battlestar Galactica series so successful. The problem with this is that the fans didn't like the direction of SGU siince it was such an extreme departure from the previous Stargate shows. Just a simple look over at the SyFy forums can give you a clue as to how much the fans didn't like the new direction for Stargate.

Unfortunately, Stargate may be done for quite some time and it's a shame that the producers for SGU didn't listen to what the fans were telling them. This is why the Battlestar Galactica spinoff, Caprica, failed. Because the fans of the original series were expecting to see the origins of the Cylon War that predated SyFy's Battlestar Galactica series and they decided to turn that into a soap opera type of series.

With Stargate Universe, many fans complained that it was Melrose Place in space and the fans retailiated against the producers with their brutal reviews of the series. I think when producers are workinig on a series where the fans are truly dedicated to that series, that producers need to start listening to the fans who are watching the show. They cannot rely on numbers and figures being reported by Nielson, it's the fans who are the best gauge on what's wrong with a television series.

"TiVo and Blu-ray sales don't count for ratings, and many people have busy lives."

RJ Smoove really RJ sales don't count for anything I guess you have never heard of a little show called Family Guy or Futurama both brought back because of their strong sales. Unless you are a little kid you should have know that.

"Nathan Fillion as a good show with Castle on ABC."

P@t_Mtl I guess you didn't get the news in Canada, Castle is cancelled. Mr. Fillion has said before that Firefly was his favorite role and would come back in a second if the funding was there. V is on the bubble it might be done as well.

Hey idiot, I said "ratings". Ever heard of those? Obviously home media sales count for something, but not original TV airing ratings. Also, your grammar is dogshit. Enroll in an English class.

It's official. V has been canceled. Nathan Fillion's series, Castle, has been renewed for another season, he'll be coming back in the fall. V has been canceled because of low ratings that the series has suffered. This is what ABC gets for cutting the number of episodes ordered and prolonging the series as they did for several months between episode 4 and episode 5 of the first season and then waiting forever to debut season 2.
