Besides the obvious better image and sound whichi are the main differences between these two versions?
I have the DVD version and looking to upgrade but is it worth the $50 bucks or so for the same features or should I just wait? |

I don't think they re-mixed the sound for the Blu-ray they just matrixed it to 5.1 (And if they did re-mix they did not do a good job of it) You can matrix the Dvd with most receivers to 5.1 sound. To my ears I did not notice any big changes in sound from the blu ray to the DVD matrixed to 5.1 on my receiver.

Most of the scenes without FX look better than the DVD, but it's not a huge leap in quality. The audio was also marginally improved, but again Firefly is one of the only shows to realistically depict space travel(i.e. it's a quiet vacuum), so don't expect any major upgrade there either.
If you can get it for around 30 bucks or less, definitely pick it up. It has some new extras and it does look and sound better than the DVD. Plus it fits all the episodes on 3 discs. |

I must say that the PQ was very good for a TV show for the HD scenes, much better than I anticipated. I also liked the refined grain field in addition to the detail boost. If you compare it to the DVD, the DVD looks like a blurry mess.
The audio was a big upgrade too, while not up to the same levels as, say, Serenity, it was much easier to understand the voices and the sound field was widened a bit, making for a bit more immersion. I got this for $38 used and it is as good as the show will ever look, so I'm happy. |

-Two additional extras ( roundtable discussion in HD, a new commentary track not on the DVD for "Our Mrs. Reynolds") -3 discs instead of 4 -5.1 DTS Master audio instead of Dolby 2.0 (even if it's matrixed surround, it's still a great track) -Standard Definition effects are smoother, and completely free of the compression artifacts caused by the mpeg-2 encoding on the DVD, so they are still better than DVD in addition to the remaining 1080p non-effects scenes, which clearly dominate if you were to add them up. -you get all the extras the original DVD had as well, only they remain SD. This plus Serenity's excellent Blu-ray release equal one great total package of a great story told in HD. |

I Agree if you want hi-def then buy the blu-ray if you don't then stick with DVD but soon DVD will go the way of batamx tapes when the VHS batamax wars was on

But I think the key difference is that DVDs (at least for the foreseeable future) should always be conveniently playable and therefore useful and usable... The fact that the BD physical format is still identical in physical size as the DVD, and the fact that all BD players play DVDs, means that the DVD you buy today will still probably be playable for years to come... Beta and VHS on the other hand are different physical formats, neither of which have a current technology base to carry on and ensure player availability... I certainly do not have a Beta or VHS player in my house... But even if BD becomes the standard and DVDs are never made again, you should still be able to play them... And I don't really think 480P is such a bad format (certainly not HD, but completely "watchable")... |

Definitely worth the upgrade, especially if one is a Whedon fan and since it can also be had for under $40 at Wal-Mart.
The 1080p transfer looks great during the non-SFX shots, but remember, the SFX shots are up-converted from 480p as Firefly wasn't originally intended to be aired in HD (this was when FOX was broadcasting it's highest quality at 480p). |
