Apologies if this has been raised before!
Should I have the PS3 set to RGB Full or Limited when connected via HDMI? My PS3 is connected to a Panasonic 32LXD700. Thank you in advance. |

i choose the automatic setting with hdmi & it chooses the ycc setting. so is rgb better than ycc.

Hmm, now we have 2 votes in favor of "Full" and 1 in favor of "Limited". Anyone else care to shed some light on the subject? Which one do you use/think is better?

From my own experience I have chosen Full RGB over either limited or ycc, just seemed to give me better colour reproduction with less of a pale sheen over the picture, if that makes sense. Using a pioneer pdp-506xde.

Definitely full.
Having it set to limited is why ps3 games looks so washed out in all those ps3/360 comparisons. Reviewers don't know wtf they're doing. |

Guys, just thought i should chime in with my opinion
It's true that using RGB full can produce richer colours rather than the more washed out looking colours of limited but i also noticed that when using full, my shadow detail was dimished & really dark in the bacground & you couldn't make out details that you could with it on limited This is what i experienced on MY tv & won't count for everybody but i do beleive it can clip shadow detail using full, have a look at the DMC trailer with the bit where Nero is sitting in the church listening to his music & theres people in the background on the benches, set it to RGB full & view it, then take a look with limited, see if the shadow detail looks the same or becomes diminished I would personally say that if playing a dark game like jericho or maybe COD4 that has some night stages, that shadow detail can help, especially online matches on the ship where you won't see much if there isn't good shadow detail Games that are pretty bright like Assassins Creed or Motorstorm, setting RGB full for them or games set at night but with a lot of background lighting should be played with RGB full to get better colours as shadow detail isn't important in these games but games like COD4 which have some night stages like the ship & the bog will strain your eyes trying to make out enemies with dimished shadow so use limited for this type of game |

Limited is the only way to go IMO. In full I have to crank the brightness somewhere around 15-20% more to make out fine details in blacks.. the end result looks washed out but limited looks perfect on my set. Keep in mind, I have my PS3 set for Blu-ray playback but gaming looks perfect to me. Last edited by saginawjuggalo; 01-07-2008 at 10:44 PM. |

This is certainly turning into an insightful thread! Does Sony have an official stance on this or is it a case of "your mileage may vary?"

I just changed mine a few days ago and lost a lot of detail dark portions of games with the RGB set to full. The colors are more vibrant but I think I'm going to go back to limited as the colors are not enhanced enough to give up dark detail.

i have mine setting set on full
if i set it to limited, it's true you get more detail in dark pictures, but i want my black to be black and not dark grey like putting the brightness verry high. and i find when i put it to limited the picture is more washed out and de black look a bit to dark grey to me. i have a panny 42 inch plasma |

I have my PS3 set to full. Took A LOT of tweaking to my displays settings to get rid of the washed out look and bring back the shadow detail but now the colors really just pop. Also, you may want to check and make sure your TV can handle full RGB before switching. If it does there likely is an advanced setting somewhere to change the displays color space to full.
Running this on a 46in 1080p Sony Bravia. |

i stil must tweak my tv to the best pq. i have not done this yet, because i own a plasma! i mean i first need to have it played for like 200 hours in order to minimize the burn in effect.
ad that point i wil tweak my plasma for the optimal pq. by the way speaking of that does anyone know a cheap and good calibration disk? |

Full is most likly the wrong setting to use.
Basicly RGB Limited is video levels (which most tvs expect) RGB Full is PC levels. this setting is not for setting colour as such, just because they become more vibrant does not mean they are accurate. the test is, if the shadow detail, or black level looks like its getting clipped or crushed then DONT set to RGB full. Some modern LCDs will auto sync with RGB FULL and limited, so on these TVs it wont matter. On other TVs if you set the PS3 to FULL you also have to make sure the TV is set to full otherwise the tv will be expecting video levels and your sending it PC levels. Full adds nothing to the image, it just set the correct range. RGB LTD will almost always be the right setting. For BDs use the component out put ie the YP PR or however the PS3 lists it as. So only use FULL if your display is expecting PC levels. If you go to full and have to readjust brightness etc, all you have done is gone back to syncing to RGB LTD in a manual kindof way = pointless. |
