Default Luther Season 2 Heads into Post Production

Luther Season 2 Heads into Post Production

Quote:
That’s a wrap!

Production on Luther Season 2 officially wrapped today as announced on the BBC Luther Facebook fan page. After the dramatic season 1 cliffhanger, fans are anxious to see what the future holds for DCI John Luther (Idris Elba), Mark North (Paul McGann) and Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson).

Luther joins Sherlock (starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman) as one of 2010′s breakout BBC dramas. It introduced us to the calculating DCI John Luther, whose methodical mind worked much like the intelligent criminals he went after. We were also introduced to Alice, one of TV’s newest and most devious villains. The two developed a mutual admiration for each other that bordered on the psychotic.

With the Luther Season 2 premiere edging closer, fans will be excited to see how the Luther-Alice dynamic plays out. Elba was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for Season 1. The series was nominated for three Best of TV 2011 Awards.

Really looking forward to this. While the middle episodes of the show weren't stellar, I absolutely loved Luther and Alice's relationship in Series 1.

Definitely excited to see where the show goes next.

Okay I'm FINALLY watching this. Ironic considering I started the damn thread. lol. I never got around to watching it, and only watched the 1st few minutes of the 1st episode (up til the credits).

So now I'm watching it, and I'm on Episode 2 where that guy just did that sniper attack on the cops in that square.

Few thoughts so far.

1. Holy shit is Elba just insanely out of control and unstable. I can not IMAGINE he could ever get away with that shit and keep his job. I mean for all the people (like myself) who roll their eyes at House getting away with shit and keeping his job, with this it's just unbelievable.

Brilliant drama and acting, but not very realistic, I have to say.

2. ahhhhhhhhhh Indira Varma. I love her. She's always nice to look at, and a good actress to boot. BBC's Hustle she starred in two episodes, then she was a main cast member in Season 2 of Human Target.

3. In the 2nd episode when that dude replaced the walkie's on the dead cop, I was like "WHOA!" Talk about brilliant. They have a walkie, so no one is looking for it, and they won't change channels. Very interesting.

4. My one complaint so far in these episodes, is how quickly Luther finds out who did it. He spoke with that psycho chick for a few minutes, and because she didn't yawn when he did, he knew it was her. Then in the 2nd one, they're looking for a soldier, and because a soldier killed a cop and is in prison for life, they just assume his son did it? Kind of a leap in faith there. Turned out to be right, but still. Out of all the soldiers back, they just managed to correctly pick THE guy.

meh.

Like the show though.

A lot of the BBC mystery shows are done that way. It's just how it's done. I see it as quality control.

Holy shit @ the end of Episode 4! WOW, didn't see that coming.

That was an interesting episode, to say the least. Mainly because Rob Jarvis, who I only know as Eddie the naive and sometimes idiot (but 100% stand up guy) bartender in the BBC series Hustle, is this BRUTAL serial killer. Also Nicola Walker (Spooks' character Ruth) plays his wife who has a fantastic break down scene when she first realizes what her husband is.

Crazy shit, man.

Also, am I the only one that REALLY likes the way they do their credits/preview of next episode? Would love to see more shows do that. With the music over it, and the alternating between credits and sneak peek. That's a pretty interesting and original way of doing it.

This was one of the few crime dramas where I could rewatch a few times, and it is a shame that no Blu-ray has been released. I have only seen a DVD version of series 1 available, does anyone know if there might be a Blu-ray release at a later date? BBC seem a bit incosistent with their releases of TV shows on Blu-ray.

No, I thought that was the most interesting part of the series. The rest was "so bad it's good" because of the OTT-ness. That's why I can't wait for more: It's like CSI: Miami meets The Young and the Restless.

EDIT: The BBC Shop already has the UK Series 2 DVD up for pre-order with a 27 June release date, so this should premiere in the UK quite soon. There is also a short promo video of new footage at that link.

Second Season Of BBC America's 'Luther' Premieres October 5

Quote:
via press release:

BBC AMERICA ANNOUNCES NEW DRAMA DESTINATION “DRAMAVILLE” HOSTED BY GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINEE IDRIS ELBA

New York – May 25, 2011 - BBC AMERICA today announced plans to increase its commitment to high quality and critically acclaimed British drama with the launch of a new weekly, hour-long slot, Dramaville. It will be hosted by Golden Globe nominee and Luther star, Idris Elba, who will also serve as producer of the Dramaville host wraps through his company Headshell Productions. Dramaville premieresWednesday, August 17, 10:00p.m. ET/PT beginning with The Hour, a six-part edge-of-your-seat espionage thriller set in the 1950s.

Following the six week run of The Hour, Dramaville will play home to Luther, a sequel to the first critically acclaimed mini-series of the same name which stars Elba in the title role, followed by Whitechapel, a six-part contemporary crime thriller set in the shadow of Jack the Ripper and the infamous Kray Twins of the 1960s.

Perry Simon, General Manager, Channels, BBC Worldwide America says: “British drama has long been a standard bearer of great scripted television and Dramaville will showcase the very best of British creativity in a clear destination drama fans can easily find. It’s a real pleasure to welcome Idris back to the BBC AMERICA family as the host of Dramaville.”

Further details of the Dramaville franchise:

Launching the Dramaville slot is the previously announced BBC AMERICA co-production, The Hour. A six-part drama series, created and written by BAFTA award-winning Abi Morgan (White Girl, Sex Traffic, Brick Lane, Murder), it stars Dominic West (The Wire, The Devil’s *****), Romola Garai (Emma, Atonement) and Ben Whishaw (Bright Star, Criminal Justice, Brideshead Revisited) locked in a highly competitive, sharp witted and passionate love triangle. The series, set behind the scenes of the BBC’s newsroom in London in the mid ‘50s, is an edge-of-your-seat spy thriller. Produced by Kudos (Life on Mars, Spooks, Law And Order U.K.), it is distributed by Shine International. It’s a Kudos Film and Television/BBC AMERICA co-production for the BBC. The executive producers are Jane Featherstone, Derek Wax and Abi Morgan for Kudos Film and Television and Lucy Richer for the BBC. The Hour premieres Wednesday, August 17, 10:00p.m. ET/PT.

Golden Globe nominee Idris Elba is back in the previously announced, mini-series sequel Luther. EIba (Thor, The Wire) stars as John Luther, the near-genius detective struggling to cope with his own demons, in two distinctive, thrilling crime stories. Devastated by the brutal murder of his wife, John Luther returns to policing in a different world. His old unit has gone and he’s working in the newly created Serious and Serial Unit, headed by former police complaints officer Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley, Babel, Bleak House). Luther quickly gathers together his team, rescuing his old partner Detective Justin Ripley (Warren Brown, Occupation, Shameless) from uniform. It’s not long before they’re dealing with their first case. A masked man wanders the streets of London, carrying out ritualistic murders in historic locations, working his way up to one final masterpiece. It’s written by Neil Cross, Philippa Giles is executive producer and it’s a BBC and BBC AMERICA co-production. Luther premieres Wednesday, October 5, 10:00p.m. ET/PT.

Announced today, Whitechapel is a six-part U.S. premiere crime drama set in modern day East London where the police force is faced with the brutal and bloody history of their streets – from echoes of the 19th century and Jack the Ripper to the infamous ‘60s crime twins Ronnie and Reggie Kray. As the murder rate rises and there are no clues, Chandler and Miles realize the modern day killers are copying infamous crimes of the past. Can the detectives do what their fellow officers failed to do and catch the murderers? It stars Rupert Penry-Jones (Spooks, Persuasion) as Detective Inspector Chandler, Phil Davis (Bleak House, Vera Drake, Ashes to Ashes) as Detective Sergeant Miles and Steve Pemberton (The League of Gentlemen) as Edward Buchan. It’s written by Ben Court and Caroline Ip, Sally Woodward Gentle is executive producer and it’s a Carnival Films production for ITV. Whitechapel premieres Wednesday, November 2, 10:00p.m. ET/PT.

How did you all find the first episode of series 2? It was great to see Alice back in series 2, as I feel she is almost as important as Luther in making the show so great.

I'm trying to think of more UK series like this which have good character studies, and a darker theme as well as being strong visually. Thorne was very similar, but I'm trying to think of more shows which have such a strong element on the psychology of the main character. The British Wallander could also apply I guess, as well as Whitechapel and Cracker. Does anyone have any more suggestions?

Cheers

I enjoy Luther more for Elba's performance, the stories are a little OTT. The 1st episode of the 2nd series was entertaining and well paced despite a few plot holes.

If you like this then you should check out BBC's recent 7 part drama thriller The Shadow Line (finsihed last night, has received a rather mixed reaction over here, reminded although not quite on the same standard of The Red Riding Trilogy. Not up there with State of Play ( The BBC version towers over the Crowe, Affleck flick) but still 7 solid hours of TV.

Aha, yeah I was going to mention those two. I was surprised Red Riding didn't get a UK Blu-ray release, and it was only released in USA and Canada. I will have to pick that up. Does anyone know if they have ruled out a UK release completely?

Shadow Line seems very good; I watched the first episode last week, and thought it was excellent. But I decided to hold out on watching the rest, until the Blu-ray of that is released in early July, which I definitely plan to buy
