Blu-ray Samurai

Hi There,
Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but this has started to really annoy me alot. I have a Samsung DLP 56" HL-R5662W. On certain movies, during dark sequences or fog sequences I notice a sort of mosaic/pixelation form around the lighted areas. It looks aweful. This problem never occured using my Pioneer player using the same DVD's. Wondering if anyone knows if its the TV or the PS3 settings that is causing this. Some detail of black is also lost off Blu-ray discs as well. Such as Harry Potter 4. In the underwater sequences you can see alot of this mosaic effect. Any suggestions would be helpful. On the Samsung, I have setup it on Cinema mode with DNIE enabled. On the PS3, I have it set to 1080i (Since 720p looked really bad), with: DVD Upscaler - Normal BD/DVD Video Output format (HDMI) - Y Pb / Cb Pr / Cr BD 1080p 24hz Output (HDMI) - Automatic Cross Colour Reduction Filter - Off RGB Full Range (HDMI) - Full Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI) - On Also set: Frame Noise Reduction to 3 Block Noise Reduction to 3 Now the Block Noise sounds like the problems as it set to reduce mosaic-like block noise displayed on the screen. But increasing really has done very little. Any advise? Last edited by tilallr1; 01-08-2008 at 07:49 PM. |

Yeh. I remember turning it off once with my Pioneer DVD player and the picture looked aweful compared to when it was on. But that was via Component. Now with the PS3 via HDMI I wonder if the DNiE is screwing up the picture so how.

Ok so confirmed that my setting were correct. RGB set to FULL as did test and all is good for RGB setting to full. So no problems there.
Also, as I fear DNIE is definitely a must. Without it the picture looks horrible. Also played around the other Upscaler settings. Really only made minor difference. Not the culprit. Ok, maybe someone who has the new Blade Runner DVD can answer me at the beginning of the movie do you see major mosaic around the lights up from the Tyrell organization or around some of the larger fire blooms? I tried it on my Pioneer DVD player and see no imperfections what so ever. I am beginning to think that the DVD player on the Playstation isn't that great. Either that or there is something bad about the upconverter. Of course turning it off look horid. But it strange that my Pioneer player looks just as good and it doesn't upconvert. Any thoughts? Anyone with an HL-R samsung DLP that would like to share their settings? |

You can't change a couple of settings and then expect the rest to suit those changes. For example DNIe may automatically whack up the contrast and to combat that you've in the past set the manual contrast level lower. Now you turn off DNIe and everything looks grey and washed out. The same would happen if you've set everything up on the tv for RGB Full then set it to limited.
Your tv may currently be set up well for your regular DVD player but not the PS3. |

I wasn't impressed with the video quality of the upconversion, so I continue to use my Oppo DV-981HD. I recommend using your DVD player for that and the PS3 for Blu-ray. Set those connections to be optimized for thise devices and be satisfied with the performance.

I find the PS3 upscaling to be great. I do notice that certain things do appear hazier than others. Stargate SG1 (at least seasons 5-7) is an example of what I thought would look great, but in reality the upconversion seems quite lack luster. I personally attribute this to their mastering effects, which are a little hazey themselves. The new Battlestar Galactica is another dvd I thought would look awesome, but was dissapointing... but this also hase some hazey mastering effects.
I also may just be too spoiled Blu! |

But as a Blu Ray player, the PS3 is my top choice (given the current offerings on the market). I wonder when Oppo will come up with a top-notch low-priced BD player ... ![]() |

I did when I setup my DVD player. However, should I recalibrate it with my PS3 instead? Would it make any difference? I used DVE when I did it and found that the Cinema setting for the Samsung DLP was a perfect calibration for the TV. Also that DNIE was a good addition.
Please note, Blu-ray movies really look wonderful and really have little problems. DVD's playback is where I am having the problem. Really evident at the beginning of Final Cut of Blade Runner on DVD as a frame of reference. Does anyone have this to test? Just wondering if you are seeing what I am seeing. Anyone with a Samsung DLP? What are your settings? Here is an example to illustrate what I am seeing: Watch the sky in this shot. ![]() In close-up it is easier to see that there is no smooth color transition. What could be the cause of this? ![]() What is the correct term for this problem? Banding? Colour transition issue? Please note its especially noticable with dark scenes which look very patchy and almost pixelated almost like watching a low res DIVX movie. |

tilallr1, I have a Samsung HLR6167W, and I have the same problem on over compressed Dish movie channels. Especially strobe effects. I also have no problems for Bluray movies. I believe it is a compression problem, that can't be fixed. Sorry. I use the movie setting on my tv.
