unfortunate what has happened w/WSR over the years... i was a subscriber from issue #1 and even though i still get the issues... it feels as if the editor and his wife are running a one man shop or one couple shop.

i do have a question that a viable answer would be wonderful. about the same time window that dts came to LD's there was a company that was modifying particular components to read the dts tracks. i thought it was a brach of dts. i had my Elite sp-99d done. sweet piece of work.
any help out there...???

When I first heard the DTS on all Laser-discs were better than most of the stuff on DVD I said get out of here, but they have a higher bitrate than DTS on most DVD's.

The crow on laserdisc sounds very good, it is in dts. I think dolby digital on laser disc's sounds terrible. I prefer listening to digital stereo with PLIIX.

I have never watched a laserdisc either. I've only had Beta, VHS, DVD, and BD. When I was a kid, my parents would rip VHS rentals to Beta. I had most of my Disney movies when I was little that way, and only had 2-3 authentic Disney movies in the bulk plastic VHS cases. I definitely have more on DVD and Blu-Ray now.

It's an easy concept...

Dolby Digital on DVD - 384kbps or 448kbps

DTS on Laserdisc - 1.235Mbps

Enough said.

2 different codecs with entirely different methods of compression.

Take video: MPEG2 requires more bitrate than VC-1 or AVC, yet it's inferior.

Enough said.

Well apparently my hearing is inferior as well as I'll take DTS on LD over DVD any day.

Please forgive me, I am a total noob with laserdiscs, I've been aware of them for a long time, but have never watched one. Would it be fair to say that picture quality is somewhere between VHS & DVD? I'm looking at purchasing one off ebay, just to start out....thoughts?

Something like that. Some of the best LaserDiscs rival early studio DVDs for picture quality. For a long time, LD was as good as it got for home video.

DVDs completely overwhelm LD when watching with component video and 16x9 transfers. On large digital displays, LD can be downright painful to watch.

Still, there's more than a few LDs that never made the jump to DVD, and LDs always got a lot more TLC when it came to supplement packages that some DVDs never got. Some of the Disney CAV format box sets have yet to be surpassed.

with blu-ray around why are you even considering getting into laserdiscs? I have over 100 laserdiscs sitting on a shelf...don't waste your money seriously.

Don't do it! Why do you want to go back in time, using old technology? Laserdisc is obsolete! With blu-ray, you don't need a Laserdisc Player.

I don't really see myself spending a lot of money on laserdiscs, my main interest is in being able to grab some of the stuff (mainly music video type stuff) that isn't on dvd...
