Disney is really good about releases, I would expect these sooner that later. Nothing official yet though...

I myself are really looking forward to Disney's releases this year. Specifically, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and possibly Finding Nemo.

Hell I am not ashamed to admit it. I am 33 and love the movies mentioned. I grew up with Disney and to see them on Blu would be great. Don't forget about Fantasia, how great would that be in 1080p with PCM audio?

Haven't you heard? All of these are already available on DVD! I hear if you watch them on one of Toshiba's $149 "upconverting" players, it looks just like Blu-ray!

Not that great.

I have the Fantasia DVD, and as good as the restoration job was, the film still shows its age. All 60+ years of it. I'm sure it would show a marked improvement on BD, but it won't likely be demo material. That goes for the sound as well..it was remixed to 5.0 for the DVD, but you could tell it'd been recorded in mono, and with ancient equipment. There's not a lot of punch in it.

And to top it all off, the film's original aspect ratio of 1.33:1 would have to be preserved.

Fantasia 2000, however, is an entirely different story. 1.85:1 aspect ratio, at least 5.1 channels in the original mix, and a much newer print...I'd love to see Rhapsody in Blue in 1080p.

I still want the original on BD, but I don't have high hopes for it being a mind-blowing experience.

Fantasia was the first movie recorded in multichannel. My PAL DVD version (not the PAL disc sold in the UK, another mastering) looks better and more filmic than my NTSC disc and that's just 20% more res. Btw, the Academy aspect ratio is 1.375, not 1.33

You're right...I stand corrected there. A piece of trivia I should have remembered.

The same can be said of just about any PAL DVD mastered from film. The extra 96 lines always make a difference, if you ask me.

Looking at the back of the 60th Anniversary DVD Edition (NTSC), the specs say "Original Theatrical Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1".

0.600" x 0.825" is the Academy Sound Aperture Aspect Ratio standard that was established by the end of 1931.

By good you mean has a really greedy plan on how to schedule their releases. "Oh, we'll release something for a limited time and then it won't be made anymore until seven years later. That means we can keep releasing the same material over and over and people will still buy it!"

I think that was decided because they didn't want to see their innovative classics relegated to the bargain bins at some super store. While it's frustrating that the delay is so long (I want to get Lion King for my kids - I know they'd love it) it's nice to see the studio take pride in their films and give them the royal treatment once they do release. The Platinum disc collections are amazing, and the restorative work they did on Jungle Book was phenomenal.

Yeah, they want to drain as much cash from you as possible, but at least you get a quality release.

I suppose that Disney should devote production resources, marketing budgets, and shelf space--both warehousing and retail---to having all of their catalog available all of the time because that's how all the other studios operate...

This has all been posted before in other threads (Search function is your friend, but a flighty one!), but here:

Quote:
"Sleeping Beauty" had been previously announced as the first classic animated title to be released in Blu-ray, and [Gordon] Ho [Executive Vice President of Worldwide Brand Marketing and Product Management for Walt Disney] said that after that October '08 release, Disney would be releasing three to four "Platinum" titles every spring and fall. With noticeable passion he talked about how breathless all the studio brass were when they got their first glimpse of "Sleeping Beauty" on Blu-ray. Ho didn't say so, and there's obviously no timetable, but a big screen demonstration we watched at the "Ratatouille" release party the following evening listed these Disney titles as forthcoming in Blu-ray:

"Aladdin"
"The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe"
"Cinderella"
"Dumbo"
"Freaky Friday"
"Lilo & Stitch"
"The Lion King"
"The Little Mermaid"
"The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh"
"Monster's Inc."
"National Treasure"
"101 Dalmatians"
"The Parent Trap"
"Peter Pan"
"Pinocchio"
"Pocahontas"
"The Princess Diaries"
"The Rookie"
"The Santa Clause"
"The Santa Clause 2"
"The Shaggy Dog"
"Tarzan"
"Toy Story 2"
Story here, dated Nov 2 '07.

For The Nightmare Before Christmas:

Quote:
Fans will also be pleased to hear the A Nightmare Before Christmas has just entered the production pipeline at Disney, so look for that animated jewel sometime in the middle to fall of next year.
Story here, Oct 31 '07 (scroll to the end of the story).

Who Framed Roger Rabbit has been announced for release in France and Australia; hopefully a North American date will be set soon.

Toy Story 2 but no Toy Story 1? That's dissapointing. Not that #2 was worse than the first (it was equal, I'd say) but I was hoping for both to be released at the same time.
