Used to be, on the Usenet groups, we had terms for premature Oscar-buzzing.
(Don't worry, happens to everyone when they're a kid; just relax, try again, and don't get so overexcited...) ![]() One of the favorite terms we used to have was "What's going to be this year's 'Beloved'?" You remember that one, don't you? The slave-period Toni Morrison adaptation directed by Jonathan Demme, whose trailer had "Oscar sweep" written all over it, simply because, well, it SHOULD? And then, the week the movie opened.....(wheeeww) (thud!) ( ![]() A lot of folks were forced to tear up their betting slips in October. That'll teach 'em. (If such movies still got nominated sight-unseen on pedigree and assumption, and still turned out to be crap onscreen, then they became "this year's Green Mile", and it usually caused the Oscar voters to panic at the last minute.) There's "Oscar-bait", and there's "Oscar-bating". ![]() I didn't see Spielberg at the Oscars the year "A.I.", "Catch Me If You Can", "The Terminal" or "Amistad", came out, even though a lot of very starry-eyed and easily awed fanboys thought he would be. (Of course, then again, those wear the years back when we had real nominees, not the gullible press-hype crap that the Golden Globe nominates, see above.) I'm not slamming War Horse before it comes out, but then, I'm not renting tuxes two months before it comes out, either. I'm with Murphy: ANYTHING can happen on opening night. Where the hell is Moneyball? It has the reviews, the box office prowess, and the pedigree to get to the big race. The fact that Pitt isn't mentioned is astonishing! It's also way too early to break down the race and no one's even sure if there will be ten films worthy of a nomination; remember, the Academy came out with a ruling where there can be anywhere between 5-10 nominated films for Best Picture.
I think the only sure bets are War Horse (Spielberg idolizing Lean), Moneyball, The Tree of Life (the best and most controversial film of the year, without a doubt), and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. I put the last as a sure bet because the Academy loves Daldry and the material is enough to get this film in. I've heard mixed word on A Dangerous Method to not even consider it for BP and also, if A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, the best films of 2005 and 2007, couldn't get nominations, this won't. I don't think Cars 2 will even get an Animation nomination. Reviews were horrendous and Disney would be better off playing their cards with Winnie the Pooh, seeing as how it was well reviewed and a traditional feature that was just put out a seriously bad time (hello, against the last Potter?) Also, Spielberg has Tintin out and I'd be shocked if that didn't get pushed for Animation. This isn't Zemeckis with his soulless crap.. Animation will be... Winnie the Pooh The Adventures of Tintin Rango* (Kung Fu Panda 2) (Puss in Boots) (Rio) I don't think this will be a year for five in that category but if so, that will be the five. I could be wrong on Cars 2 but I really think the animators in the Academy want to punish Pixar just once and that's the first output that's really failed on every level, excluding merchandise. Category I'm looking forward to seeing is Best Original Score. Right now, I'd put Giacchino in the lead with Super 8 and it's gonna be exciting to see the future king of film composers in the same company as the current, John Williams, who has two scores for Tinin and War Horse. *I totally forgot about Rango! With that in mind, that's the easy frontrunner for the Animation category. ![]() Last edited by Wally Q; 10-03-2011 at 12:24 AM. |

Everytime I watch the Oscars, I end up swearing endlessly at the TV for snubbing the better movies.

It slipped my mind originally when I put up my post. My bad, it definitely was the most deranged and subversive animated film in sometime. I think it could also get a visual effects nomination as well but I doubt it.

Exactly! Which is one of the main reasons why I don't watch them anymore. When Cher won for: Moonstruck over Glenn Close for: Fatal Attraction in 1987, I was furious! I was through with The Academy Awards forever.

The Academy thought Sean Penn's performance in Milk was better than Rourke's in The Wrestler. I seriously can't believe they watched both movies before making the decision. I own both movies and while Penn is great he doesnt even come close to Rourke's performance in The Wrestler. I stopped caring about the oscar's after that.
Also, david fincher deserves some kind of award for giving us Fight Club. Has he won anything as yet? Last edited by arsenal_fan; 10-03-2011 at 02:10 AM. |
