As I've mentioned, I'm a software developer and happen to be in the amazon.com developer program. If you check out
http://www.klipschcorner.com/ShopAmazon.aspx you can see a basic amazon search/display that I did on KlipschCorner. I'm wondering if it'd be worth it to do my own Amazon sales rankings site, to see if my numbers match up with theirs, or provide different statistics etc? |

It may be.
The HD Gamer DB one is run by a notorious HD DVD fanboi (HomerJay) who could yank down things at any time because it isn't telling people the story he wants told. And all along people worried that thedvdwars.com was biased. What would be most useful is perspective on the ranking numbers. We simply don't know what they really mean. And how they are affected (up and down). |

I'll have to check, but the most useful # I can think of is NUMBER of units sold, and I don't think the API provides that. |

I am sure that we could come up with a better representation of the stats as well.
It is difficult, for example, to compare and get stats on the BDs or HD DVDs alone - the 'game' site always shows the rank of both ranks (ie, #1 is BD, #2 is HD DVD, #3 is BD (though it is BD #2!) and so on. With a big long list it is useful to see which we are up to. DVDWars is decent but not as varied or quick to update. |

I doubt the update could be done much faster than 15 minutes. One of the stipulations amazon gives you is that you cannot send them requests for data more than 1 time per second: given the number of requests it must take to aggregate all that data, one would have to be very creative to update much more often.

I may start looking into it tonight, depending on what Netflix brings me in the mail this afternoon.

Obviously old data can't be obtained, but keeping the data to show long term trends would be cool. Thedvdwars.com has data since inception, but it is very poorly presented. Also, weekly, monthly, YTD, and overall averages for top 10 to all titles. Gary |

Another potentially useful statistic would be average price for titles released on both formats - ie average price for Warner, Paramount and the various independents that give us a choice of format.
That would demonstrate the real price comparison, since the same companies are represented on both sides of the coin. |
