Default PS3 USB dongle for your IR universal remote controls...

posted this a while back, and glanced back to see i havent actually posted this here.

care of my colleague at another pond, this works well with your ps3.

as the title implies,

you connect this via usb port, then use the ps2 remote control features (available to download from the indurnet) and viola. the universe is not restored.

I got the Nyko Blu Wave on Amazon for $14 -- works PERFECT! Nice quality remote, instant feedback, and a small, very sensitive IR receiver.

I immediately used my HTM universal remote to learn the commands, which now I can do everything from one remote, except hit the PS button. Very nice.

In fact, now I don't have to use the PS3 controller at all to exit F@H to watch a movie... just hit the circle button and hop out.

Exactly. I bought the Nyko remote for $14 at Amazon just to use the dongle and commands with my Logitech Harmony Universal 880 remote. It works perfectly, and it only took 5 minutes to learn the commands and map them to the appropriate buttons.

Anyone with a Harmony remote needs to do this ASAP! It will once again allow you to use just your Harmony remote for everything, including your PS3.

Nope. If you're just using the PS3 as a player, putting a disc in turns the unit on, and while you're up there taking the disc out, just hold the power for ~3 seconds.

miokti: The PS3IRX1 by Schmartz is also supported by Harmony. You simply set up the remote as if the PS3 were a PS2. The PS3IRX1 accepts the old PS2 DVD remote command set and sends commands to the PS3 via USB, just like the Nyko Blu-Wave. I don't own one myself though as I feel that $35 is a bit too much money to fix a problem that I feel should not have happened and I don't really mind using the PS3 pad..

I was really surprised that Sony made the "mistake" of not including IR given that the original PS2 also did not have a built-in IR sensor but Sony eventually resolved that issue in later versions of the PS2 console. I realise they were trying to keep costs down with PS3 but I have a hard time believing that an IR port would have added a significant amount to the dev/manufacturing costs.. Oh well, c'est la vie..

In addition to the PS3toothfairy, there is another product called IR4PS3. This has all the functions of the PS3 Bluetooth remote since it uses the chip from the remote, including turning the PS3 on and off. It is supported by Harmony, as well.

You can read the reviews. It is less expensive than the ps3toothfairy. To get more details you can email a guy named Ben, who makes them, at ir4ps3@hotmail.com

The PS3 Toothfairy is awesome. I've had it for almost a year now, and it has worked flawlessly the entire time. Full functionality just as if the PS3 had it's own IR port.

Anyone know what a ToothFairy runs? The site currently says sold out, and I didn't see a price.

I just use my Harmony remote for everything except the PS3 and use the PS3 remote. So instead of using like 12 remotes I'm down to 2. Not bad.

To much for my cheap blood.

From the Toothfariy FAQ

How much does it cost?

There is another option. You could also get the IR4PS3, which is basically the exact same as the PS3toothfairy. You have to buy them from the guy's email address, but the units are well known on AVS to be legit and are also well regarded. The basic unit that will require your Sony PS3 Bluetooth remote chip is 40 dollars, and the full unit that's ready out of the box is 64. Much cheaper than the PS3. For more info, email your questions to ir4ps3@hotmail.com.

I bought one last week, so hopefully it'll be here today. I'll post an update.

How do you set it up? I have the Harmony 520 and just got it for Xmas - I plan to get the Blu-wave this week. How do I "teach" it the Blu-wave commands? Is this through the PC software?

Thanks!

I have one of the very first IR4PS3's (probably one of the first 10 Ben ever made). Still works like a champ.

I just got mine today and put it together. It works SO much better than the Nyco. I took the Nyco back to Best Buy and told them what a bad product it was, and they agreed and said that item gets returned frequently. The main problems with the Nyco is that it's so un-responsive and it doesn't have a PS button and not being able to turn on/off the PS3.

Not only that, 40 dollars for a product that works perfectly and does everything you'd expect is much more justifyable than 17-20 dollars for a product that doesn't. This is assuming you have the Sony Bluetooth remote, otherwise it'll cost 64.
