Default Rumours - 80GB discontinued? Price drop? New SKU?

http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=24562

Looks like Best Buy will stop selling the 80 gig and only sell the 40 gig. What do you guys think?

Alan

psp is b device while ps3 is a g device. psp needs less bandwidth to function.

I am will to bet sooner rather then later, as well. When I replaced my 60 for a 40GB (upgraded HDD of course) I knew I was giving up the PS2 BC but since I have owned a PS2 since it's launch I am full ready to retire it and it's games(the other stuff is almost useless to me as I have never even seen a SACD, and with a 320GB FAT32 formatted extrenal HDD I have little use for expensive flash cards).

That being said with production costs coming down and the 80GB being 50/50 between software and hardware for it's BC I am willing to bet the next set of PS3's include the 40's smaller chips(maybe even more smaller chips) and 100% software BC to bring PS3 into a profit margin (as Kaz stated). It just takes alot of time to engineer the that last 50% of the hardware into emulation.

65 nm cell is in there but 45nm rsx (that's what it was in japan's white model). 65nm rsx is coming.

Hmm, that's surprising but my local BB has been out of the 80-gig for a few weeks now so maybe that's why.

No 80gig models to be found around here either, however the Local Target and Wal Mart both have some 60gig models still in stock. Go figure.

It's amazing how many revisions they've had in the last year.

I'm glad I have the 60gb version.

I hope that the next PS3 model has all the backwards compatibility for PS1 and PS2 games. It would be easier to make it, given the 65nm switch. Plus overall, it will run cooler and quieter. That I would like. A retail price of $399 would go well later this year.

Default Here's what I'm hearing...

...Sony is going to either repackage the 80gig model with another game or take out the game bundle altogether (until Christmas that is) and drop the price any where between 30 and 50 dollars. Doing either of these 2 things calls for a new sku and while they didn't make enough of them for the holiday season (figured PS2 backwards compatablity wasn't an issue and that the extra 100 dollars off would sale the 40gig model) a lot of stores have sold out of them already and won't be replentished with a good supply until the new sku arrives. So, BBY closes out the current sku to sell through what little they have left in warehouses and then has the new sku for the new package when it's released. Personally, I think they should include R&CF:TOD in there as a "generalised game everyone would love!" So, unless Sony does something stupid (discontinues the 80gig model completely) or unless they add in PS2 support for the 40gig models via firmware update then you can rest assured there will be a new 80gig sku in the next few months on store shelves. My guess is the 40gig will be released in just white while the new 80gig is still black. But hey, nothing's official yet and I'm just a BBY employee and longtime gamer.

Well from the link, it means that Best Buy isn't carrying the 80gb.

Everything else, is extrapolation.

It's still available at GameStop.com and at many local GameStop stores.

Wow, I sure hope they don't....

My Four USB Ports are being used up already....

Port 1) Guitar Hero III Dongle
Port 2) Nyko Blu-wave USB Dongle so my harmony can control the ps3 by RF
Ports 3 & 4) USB Charging corde for both controllers....

This thing needs 4 ports.....

My guess is they will probably be upgrading it to a bigger hard drive or something...

I can't see them decreasing the larger drive in favor of a smaller one....

Think Logically folks....
