As of Jan. 28, 2008. Let the speculation begin.

Same day as the rumored price drop and introduction of the White PS3. I read this earlier and thought it to be interesting.

Umm... they're making more shelf space for the 40GB models that are selling much better. I wanted a quiet system (65 nm tech) and I don't own a PS2 so the 40GB model was a no brainier for me. Don't know about the rest of you, but since HDD upgrades down the road are a snap, the 80GB didn't make a whole lot of sense for the price they're asking.

it's still a rumor if they are dropping the 80GB PS3. this doesn't mean that it won't be dropped, but Best Buy hasn't dropped it yet.

But if you ever want to play any of the old PS2 games, the 80GB model is the way to go for a single system solution.

The 80GB is backwards compatible though, right? I guess that's it's only advantage.

Listen... to all those who are seemingly fighting a price cut, why are you doing so? I can understand being a little upset for "overpaying" assuming you bought a PS3 within the past 30 days, but a $299 price point is gold for all of us... Blu-Ray supporters, PS3 owners, and Sony fanboys alike.

The more PS3's sold, the better. Hopefully I get my PS3 on the 28th (if every store isn't sold out). I just hope it's not the white one they sell for $299. If that's the case, I'll have to wait for the black one to get a price cut. The white one is ass-ugly IMO.

Black cases are cooler looking, especially in a HT. The media card reader is also a nice feature.

Is Sony introducing a new $299 model or just reducing the cost of the current $399 model?

I think they are making room for a rumble sixaxis SKU. It is the only logical explanation.

Supposedly both.

The white version should only be different than the current 40gb in color.

The white looks...cheap. Silver would be rad. When the Jak & Daxter game comes out on PS3 they should do a Daxter pack in silver!

Update: In a response to Shacknews, an SCEA representative did not comment on the subject of Best Buy's alleged discontinuation of the 80GB PS3, but indicated that a post addressing the matter will soon be on the official PlayStation blog.
So stay tuned and keep tabs on http://blog.us.playstation.com/

I think blue or Nissan Orange (not sure what that shade is called, I just know the 350Z's and the Murano use it) would look hot.

I've posted this before, but those of you willing to pay and wait a bit (or live with out your PS3 for a few weeks), you can visit Colorwarepc.com and get the PS3 painted. hey did my iPhone and it looks great.
