how far should you be from a 40in 1080p lcd tv? would it ruin your eyes if you sit too close?

Only if you were watching movies being played by an HD-DVD player, then it's possible that you could suffer retina damage along with permanent brain damage.

Just kidding .... just sit at a distance which is comfortable for you.

5.5 feet for 1920 X 1080 content
14 feet for SDTV or DVD content

I wouldn't go to extremes as Deci did, but 4-6 feet would be my recommendation.

Any further and you lose the point of the TV encompassing your entire viewpoint. You wanna be sucked into the movie and not have the HDTV be as part of the decor.

I sit about 8-10' away from my 26" 720p TV and I still see a very noticeable improvement over SD.

I wouldn't buy into this whole viewing distance thing cuz my TV used to be even farther away and therw as still a difference.
