Newbie here....(hopefully this post is in the right forum)
I am a recent owner of a PS3, and have found my movie collection of Blu-Ray movies increasing, picture quality looks fabulous on my Toshiba DLP 52HM84, however its only 720p/1080i HDTV, which I got over 4 years ago. My question to you all is, am I missing out on the new "1080p" wave of Full HDTV LCD/Plasma's. I am thinking of buying another TV for the household, and don't want to blow my budget, since I already have a solid DLP tv. I am looking at the Samsung LCD LNT4061, which comes with all the bells and whistles. 3HDMI slots 1080p resolution, USB ports, etc..... Is this a worthy upgrade for me? or should I stand pat, and wait tell the newer technology comes out, but at the speed of tech, that is probably pointless. You know what I mean? Basically, am I going to notice my Blu-Ray Movies, in better picture quality if I go with this upgrade. I know there are better LCD's out there then this Samsung, but its on Sale, and the size is just about right for my room conditions. Thanks again, love the site......any info would greatly be appreciated. Last edited by wozman; 01-29-2008 at 04:17 PM. Reason: misleading |

hey buddy welcome, i got my 1080p sharp (in the sig) and noticed a difference, but if your thinking about picking up a receiver id leave the choice of ports for that cause at the end of the day all you'll want is one HDMI going from receiver to the TV.

Supposedly, few can notice the difference between 1080i and 1080p unless they have a pretty trained eye, a big set, and sit a ways away from it. I have a 61 inch, so I went with 1080p, not only because it was the highest res I could get at the time, but also because the bigger the picture, the more of a difference that 1080p is acutually supposed to make. So if you have a big set and you sit a ways away from it, it may be worth upgrading to 1080p. I don't think new resolutions will be out anytime soon, so there isn't a great need to wait for whatever is going to be better than 1080p. It took long enough for the three resolutions you can choose from now to become a standard. It is your call. If you have enough extra cash to just go get a better TV and use your current one in a bedroom or playroom, then go for it. If you feel like waiting, the price of TVs is only going to go down. Good luck.

The upgrade can be well worth it depending on how far away you sit from your display and how good your eyesight is. Check out the following link:
http://www.carltonbale.com/2006/11/1080p-does-matter/ The chart tells you at what distance the benefits of 1080P really start to show up. 1080P also handles motion better than 1080i. |

I sold my 1080i HDTV (which served me well for 5 years) and got a 1080p LCD. Night and day. It isn't so much the resolution as it was the technology. Everything is so sharp and clear. Being able to 1:1 pixel with a 1080p image is absolutely beautiful. I would say it is a good time to upgrade. I waited it out until the 720p fad went away since I wasn't going to 'downgrade' with a new purchase. Now that 1080p is firmly in the market and 2nd/3rd gen sets are out there and prices are probably well below what you paid for your current tv, I say go for it.

It all depends on how much you are going to be watching your blu-ray movies because that is the only thing that is going to truely utilize the 1080p capabilities. Even HD channels are only in 720p so I guess it's just are you willing to spend the money for the amount of time you watch movies. There is a sig. difference in picture quality between 720p and 1080p on tv's larger than 42". Also contrast ratio plays a major part in picture quality, but once you see blu in 1080p there is no going back.
