Default In the market for a new sub

I am changing my theater set up. Selling all mybdef techs and buying 3 paradigm cinema 400 speakers. I will be mounting my plasma on the wall and doing left, right and center speakers around the plasma on the wall. I am also buying a shorter stand to make more room on the front stage since everything will be on the wall up front.

What I am trying to decide is wether to go with one decent sub to fill the room well or buy 2 smaller subs to go on either side of the new audio stand (58" wide) and have the subs basically under the left and right channels.

Some of the subs I have researched are lava, hsu, ED and of coarse paradigm. Her are a few I have considered

2 AS3-250 ED subs
2 LSP10 Lava subs
2 STF-1 HSU subs

Or a single sub

Paradigm monitor Sub 8
Velodyne Bassmatrix 10
Sun fire super junior 8
SVS SB12-NSD

Any opinions or comments are appreciated. Check out my gallery to see the front stage I have now.

Thanks

Which sub was used when you listened to the Cinema's?

Since your already buying something from the Digm dealer see what kind of price he'll give you on a package.

He had that funny looking paradigm white sub that looks like 2 tubes on the side

It was like $1300 or so, too rich for my blood. Was hoping to keep it under $500

The sub you heard was probably the Seismic 110.

The Cinema series is challenged in producing any meaningful low end below 100-120hz, so your going to want a sub that can also play the higher end bass as well. Even at 100-120hz they're still going to be somewhat limited in output so you don't want too big of a sub that's going to overpower them. I'd go back to the dealer and listen with a couple of subs that are in your price range just to get an idea of how they're going to sound with the Cinema speakers. At least that way your not just blindly picking something, at the dealers I would try out the Monitor Sub 8 and 10 and see what they sound like.

Thanks, he has a monitor 8 sub open box at the store that I could get for $595 regular $699. So $100 off I guess is not too bad.

I didn't get to hear it. I will go back to demo it with the speakers

I thought the SVS SB12 at $650 would be a great addition with plenty of range

Thanks again

If your budget is $500 or less you probably wouldn't even be able to get any of the setups you mentioned in the first post, so it might be advisable to re-evaluate those to see if they truly fit your criteria.

For movies/TV it's not a good idea to get a sub with an 8" driver, no matter how many of them you buy. The additional quantity will likely increase your overall output (volume), but will do pretty much nothing to increase lower extension. The LFE channel thrives on deep bass, which is really not something an 8" driver is physically able to do.

The Rythmik FV12 is a very solid value, which could suit your needs. How big is your room? That's a pretty critical factor when deciding on a sub.

It's not a set budget, I said would like to keep it at $500 or less. But if I need to spend a few bucks more to get what I need than ok.

Also most of those subs I have listed are $650 and below, especially if I go with one sub only

My room is 15x12 by the way.

So the big question I haven't seen anyone mention is one good sub or a couple matching subs up front?

Your right that the SVS would be the better option, I would go with the best single sub you can afford and you feel you still need more add another one later.
How did you feel the Cinema's kept up the the Digm sub that you heard them with?

15x12 is not a very large room, so it would be better to get one quality sub then 2 mediocre ones.

There's been a few nice options listed already, but another one to throw into the mix would be the XTZ 99 W12.16. I own it's youger brother -- the 99 W10.16 -- and have found it to be quite a nice sub. I did a review of it here. They come in both matte and piano black, so there are options that allow them to fit your decor better.

Paradigm monitor 8 sub can be connected wireless. Was thinking if going with that. Any thoughts in wireless? Is it as good as sub wire connection?

People often give me funny looks when I tell them this, but in my search for a bass I tried a single large sub (SVS PB13 Ultra) and dual small subs (ED A2-300) and much preferred the 2 smaller ED subs. They're what I've been using the past several years with no regrets. The bass sounds great and is even throughout the room, where with the one large sub in my particular room I had many peaks and voids throughout the room.

I actually thought about getting 2 of their entry sealed subs. I believe I mentioned them in my first post. They go down to 25hz which should be good enough. Or one larger sub that goes lower??? Oh boy decisions.....

Why are you not looking at Outlaw subs. Specifically the LFM-1 Plus. It's $549 but if you wait until st. Pattys day they always have a sale and it will be around $449 (that's what I bought it for) plus shipping will be free during the st. Patty's day sale. The sub is 100% better than anything you'll get with in it's price range or above. Dr. Hsu helped design their subs too. So if I was you this is what I would be looking at. This is also the sub I have used for almost 2 years and it's extremely good. No one who owns one or has reviewed one has anything bad to say about them and it's for a reason. Also their customer service is phenomenal. On par with OPPO if you've had any experience with OPPO, you know exactly what I'm talking about. You call them and someone always answers the phone and will speak to you about anything you ask. If you can wait until St. Pattys day. You'll save a few dollars. You can even get the LFM-1ex which is $649 for $549 during their sale, the ex is a little better, dropping to 16hz, than the plus which drops to 18hz, still extremely low, both subs truly hit their advertised low bass levels, whether or not you feel the ex model is necessary is up to you but the plus gets plenty low and makes the whole neighborhood shake if need be. Either way whenever you purchase the subs they are both down firing top notch quality subs that have piano black glass top to match most sounds systems. They are made of extremely high quality material, but you should definitely go to Outlawaudio and check them out. You'll be thanking me if you get one.

2 of these?: http://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-F1...7066960&sr=8-1

it was a little cheaper yesterday, so the price must be going back up.

http://www.lavasubs.com

two of the 10" models would be right at $500
