Hello everyone and thanks for looking at my thread. I am a 911 telecommunicator for a very busy township. Unfortunatly our supervisors have decided to disable most internet use due to other people at work going on stupied websites that they should not be going on at work . Thankfully this did not affect me getting on to this site. My work is using a program called sonic wall to block all of our sites. My question is what site can i go through that will work and i heard there is a way to set up a server from a private residence that we can use at work to go to any site.
If anyone has any information please help thanks.... |

They will still be able to tell where you are going while at work, unless you have rights to setup your own proxy server. (which I doubt) Most likely your already going through thier proxy server. The only way to get around it (if they are set up like most work enviorments), is if you have remote access to another computer off site that you can browse through. They will be able to tell when you connect to that computer.
That would most likely be grounds to get you in trouble at work as it sounds like you would be violating thier network policies. |

Be grateful for the protections your employer has in place. It can save you from the weirdos
![]() ![]() I am self employed, but work in a hospital where I know they can track every keystroke. My daily workflow is usually periods of intense activity broken up by periods of complete downtime, which I mostly spend on the internet. I keep waiting for someone to approach me about the non-occupational activity. |

No offense to the OP (I'm sure you're a decent guy), but if I found out that my local 911 operators were surfing the net while doing a critical, life-hanging-in-the-balance job that MY tax dollars pay for, I'd be pretty upset.
Please surf on your own time. When you work for a public works company and you're on the clock, you are on MY time, and my kids' time, and my neighbor's time. Stealing it for personal pursuits is insulting and immoral. I have no problem with magazines or books for downtime, but it's a proven fact that Internet use is far more distracting. Plus, if you get a 911 call, you have to put the book down to interact with your terminal, whereas you could have a web browser up playing Zuma while some poor guy is dying. Plus, a lot of other posters have it right: if your employer put those restrictions in place, trying to circumvent them is probably a firing offense. |

You have more important things to be doing... don't you think? I work at an electronics store where we actually sell Blu-ray players, and even I don't surf this site while I'm at work. Get paid, do your job. When you come home, Blu-ray.com will be waiting for you. |

My sisters both work dispatch and she told me a while back that the only website they can access are government related sites and the local newspaper. Alot of this was done to prevent outside interference such as a rogue spam virus infecting and disabling the 911 system. I would hate to be the one to do that and cost the city thousands of dollars |

The restrictions were put in there for a reason... do your job man, it doesn't matter where you work, you're on your employer's time don't waste it.

One of my friends at the 911 center in town has gone a week [6day/8hr, go mandatory overtime] without getting a single call. I can sympathesize, I really can with not wanting to be bored at work. That said, I don't think that's the best idea. |

I'm going to have to concur with the majority here - the internet may be useful and highly informative, but it's also an addictive pastime. The best answer to your question is that you should avoid trying to circumvent your employer's proxy server and focus instead on doing your job (especially when it's at an emergency call center).
