Default Help with internet connection, please!!

I'm trying to set up my brother's PS3 online. I'm using the same ethernet cable diconnected from his laptop directly to the ps3. I've reset both the ps3 and the modem (no router). The problem is that I can't get it to go online. the ip address shows but says "private network only" that's my problem how can I fix it.

might be password enabled... try to remove some security settings on the computer the internet is set up on then try again... or go buy urself a wireless router... they're like 40 bucks now for a half decent G router and your brother wont have to cable up everytime he wants to hit up the Enet

I wouldn't say password on the PC has anything to do with it. You have to have a router, doesn't have to be wireless. He just needs something that can create a private network.

Try to leave the modem turned off for at least 45 seconds. After the modem syncs up, then turn the ps3 on. The idea of adding a router is a winner. No muss, no fuss. Once the modem and router are synced up, you can plug and unplug computers and ps3 at will.

you dont have to have a router for a wired connection, just the connection needs to be discovered or set up on the PS3

In my experience I advise against dhcp on the ps3, since you probably will want to port forward on your router anyway, no reason not to set everything static.

Mine didn't seem to want to connect on it's own to my router but it works just fine with manual settings.

Edit: I just noticed you have no router, didn't read that thoroughly, if you have a service that requires mac id registration your ps3 isn't going to get an address till you get it registered, even if it doesn't I have found the ps3 to not work spectacularly on dhcp at least for me.

That could indeed be the issue, if it's saying something about private network, isp's with mac id registration default to giving a lan ip address to unregistered devices which redirects to their registration page. The ps3 web browser most likely isn't going to let you auto-register your ps3 and then even if you do when you switch back to the laptop it's going to be a problem unless you have an isp that allows you more than one ip address.

Sounds like a great time to go out and buy a nice router.

I recommend the d-link dgl series gaming routers, I have the 4300 and I like it alot, the premade gaming port forward pull down lists are handy too. Just don't buy a cheapo router, you get what you pay for.

If I'm not mistaken. Direct wired connections do not require passwords or anything. Only wireless. Maybe your PS3's intronet stuff is effed.

One more piece of info. I had the PS3 at my house and it connected wireless to my network with no problem. I did make sure to change the settings back to wire in the setup

Really you need to look at getting a router there or getting your ps3 registered to the connection most likely. It sounds like you have that style of connection.

It should be obvious if the Ip address the ps3 gets is very different from the notebook.

Example 10.x.x.x versus 209.x.x.x

That's what I was thinking myself. If it's wired there is no need for a password.

If I was connecting more than one PC, PS3 or not, I would want a router. If nothing else for security. Go out spend forty dollars and be done.

Call your isp to hear them say the same thing I just said and say 20 times a week to people who call with the same question.

Thanks guys I got it. I unplugged the modem for a few minutes and the PS3 connected. I guess I didn't have it off long enough before.
