Default 'The Karate Kid 2'

Quote:
Zak Penn Rewriting Sequel To ‘The Karate Kid’ Remake

As a huge fan of the original Karate Kid, I die a little bit inside anytime I see the three words “The Karate Kid” on my TV guide only to find it’s the 2010 remake with Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. Apparently, though, I’m in the minority. The film was an absolute smash hit for Sony, grossing $176 million domestic and about $182 internationally. Of course, a sequel was immediately set into motion with screenwriters Cyrus Voris and Ethan Reif hired to craft a story. That was about a year and a half ago.

Zak Penn, the writer of X-Men: The Last Stand and The Incredible Hulk, has now been tapped to do a rewrite on The Karate Kid 2.

Variety broke the news of Penn’s hiring and state that the studio is still mum on plot details. Also not set in stone are stars Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, but both are obviously expected to return.

Penn sometimes gets a bad rap because several of his scripts have been turned into bad films. But The Incredible Hulk is pretty solid, he wrote PCU and helped with the stories of X2 and Last Action Hero. Most recently, he’s been working on the TV show Alphas and doing some other rewrites. He’s got talent.

What I’m more curious about is the quality of the script Voris and Reif handed in. Almost all screenplays are rewritten these days, even good ones, but to hire someone like Penn suggests Karate Kid 2 needs a little more action and popcorn to it. Unfortunately, what makes the original Karate Kid so good, and all its sequels decreasingly so, are the relationships between Mr. Miyagi, Daniel and the girls in his life. If the original script is full of that, maybe there’s hope after all.

No matter what, let’s just all pray they go to another country and bang some drums and stuff this time around. (My obvious guess – this one brings the story back to America.)

Are you a fan of Penn’s? Do you want to see Karate Kid 2?

Oh no, not more "Will Smith whoring out his kids to Hollywood". Seriously, I'm actually happy to hear this. Hopefully it's as good as the first. To me, anyway.

I don't like any film with "Karate" and "Kid" in it's title, so this won't be any different.

I really enjoyed the first one, so I will see this one as well. It's funny as when I ask people who say "this movie is horrible" if they seen it, they all say they have not. I wonder how they know it's horrible

Jackie was very good in the role of the sifu, I think he paied great tribute to pat Morita.

Because everyone has the illusion in their mind that all remakes suck and they don't even really need to see it to know that.

Jackie Chan was really good actually. Will Smith's kid however not so much but the movie was still enjoyable despite him being in it.

I have to give the kid credit, he is growing and learning. In every other movie I saw him in he was mostly bad and annoying. Granted he is still young but you have other young actors who are good and he was mostly bad. In The Karate Kid it was the first time I actually liked him, I tought it did a good job of it. It's probably just me but my impression was that he was no longer trying to be Will Smith's kid and rather trying to be Jaden. I don't know how far he will go but I do wish him luck.

I simply couldn't remember his name which is why I said Will Smith's kid. No intention of disrespect to him He was better than his other movies for sure, edit: The Day The Earth Stood Still (awful!!!).

I think you meant The Day The Earth Stood Still.

The first was ok, but the "romance" was ham-fisted into a story about 8-year olds. Jaden might make for a better romantic lead now that he is 14, but that still seems young(at least for Hollywood years).

By contrast, Macchio was 22 when the first movie was released.

I was surprised that I enjoyed the first one. Not quite as good as the original, but for the most part worked. If they have a good script a part two could be quite effective.

Yet another pointless sequel, to a pointless remake of a classic film. I'll pass.

All movies are pointless to some degree. I will admit that I did enjoy the first one, but that doesn't mean that I had a desire to see a "Karate Kid" remake/reboot. Consequently, I have an equal non-desire to see a sequel to a movie that I already had no desire to see. But dumb-consumer me, I'll probably watch and enjoy the sequel. At least I'll wait til it hits video and not watch it in theatres. I'm in my thirties, so you know I definitely feel the originals are superior, yes even Part III, but not Part "Next".
