Default Why is the term "Blu-ray DVD" used?

I know this is a stupid question, but why do people call Blu-Ray discs Blu-Ray DVDs? To me that is like calling a DVD a DVD CD. This is just something that has been bothering me for the past couple months, I've been on this site pretty much daily for some time now and was too lazy to join and now that I saw another reference to Blu-Ray being referred to as a DVD I felt it necessary to speak up. To me it is almost as bad as www.theraider.net refering to the Indiana Jones IV Blu-Ray as Blue-Ray, after I e-mailed them they quickly changed it

*Sigh*
You guys have to get over it. To the average Joe, DVD does not mean Digital Versatile Disc but rather Digital Video Disc. While the BDA may not be able to call them a Blu-ray DVD because of licensing issues I fully expect that it will become the unofficial name used by consumers and some retailers. Blu-ray is the successor to DVD and it seems easier for some to refer to them as any of the following variants: BD, Blu-ray disc or Blu-ray DVD.

There are more important things to worry about.

This is very true, I've noticed many people in the Blu-ray isles at BB and CC that say Blu-ray dvd, kinda funny to me cause it takes longer to say, but hey people will do what they want.

Some people just take longer to change once they get used to something, and for most people all Blu-Ray is, is a better quality DVD. I don't know but Blu-Ray DVD sounds a bit weird to me, on the same note just calling it a Blu-Ray sounds a bit weird so I say Blu-Ray Disc

They are probably the same people that called the new format "dvd vhs" or "dvd tapes" back in the day when dvds first came out.

You may have noticed that in a lot of advertising they are now trying to promote it as Blu-ray High Def. This is to stop confusion that some consumers have that only HD DVD is the HD version. The same thing with Blu-ray DVD as an unofficial moniker. In time both will probably go away to end up as just Blu-ray. Personally I can't wait until the spoken word "DeeVeeDee" goes away. It is just unpleasant sounding and adding an "Achh Dee" before it just makes it worse.

Blue-ray, BRD, BR...
The correct names: Blu-ray, Blu-ray disc, BD...

They will pronounce it correctly eventually....

The only part that annoys me about the "Blu-ray DVD" name is that it sounds cheap and too close to DUD DVDs. Not to mention any DVD tie-in to a BD is an insult and also creates confussion for the uninformed public.

But whats in a word....?

This is pretty typical in human nature. There are a few product brand names that have become so much part of the language that it becomes the generic name for that product even though it may be made by another company. Examples...

1. Felt tip markers with colored ink...Magic Marker
2. Adhesive badage...Band-Aid
3. Flavored & colored sugar water... Kool-Aid
4. 5" disc with video...DVD
5. soda pop...Coke (to a lesser extent, Pepsi)

I know I am missing other products, but you get the idea. All of those list products are actual name brands but they are SO big that their name gets applied to all similar products by other companies.

BDVM is the recording format used on pressed Blu-ray movie discs... and can be written to BD-R and BD-RE discs using advanced software tools. This allows for advanced menus, etc.

BDAV is the consumer recording format that is far more basic in design and only allows for basic menus, etc.

BD-J is Blu-ray Disc Java is a full programming language/virtual machine that can be used on discs recorded in BDMV mode allowing for far more advanced features, such as games, etc.

As for "Blu-ray DVD," it makes me cringe every time I hear it. Part of the problem is that often in commercials they say, "Available on DVD and on Blu-ray high-def." They need to say Blu-ray disc... otherwise people just add on whatever ending makes sense, which to many is DVD. Worse, if they catch the "high def" part, it becomes "those high def DVDs" which will become maddeningly annouying once HD DVD is dead and Blu-ray goes mainstream.

I think the high def part was a great strategy and actually needed. Blu-ray as a term still wasn't well known and people didn't understand what it was. Plus it seperates itself from "HD" (Achh Dee) and is its own verbage. HD DVD has only used "HD" in their ads. Besides, HD has become overused and has lost its value. Everything is "HD" now. They even use it for radio which hasn't been CD quality for a long time.

I think Blu Ray DVD sounds more user-friendly than Blu Ray. An average person does not have any idea what Blu Ray or HD-DVD means. There are people who still use Beta, VHS, or Laser Disc. How about if we call it "Blu Ray Beta Tape"? Does it really matter?

Correct you are!

Same reason people say "ATM MACHINE" since ATM is an acronym for "Automated Teller Machine", so the addition of "MACHINE" on the end, is redundant (sp?) And ATMs have been around for 40 years (well, popular usage for 20 though) so people adapting to new technology is usually a long process!

That tells me something about your age Wicky. Haven't heard people call a game cartridge a tape in a LONG time.

Funny, I don't recall people confusing 8-track and cassette namewise. Or calling a music tape an album. Calling a tape a record is technically correct as it is a "recorded" medium.

Just like when people needed "Network Interface Cards" installed on their computers. They are just NIC's for short. Took me a while to realize calling them a "NIC card" was redundant.

As for blu-ray, just politely correct them. "It's called blu-ray disc. You are confusing two different technologies."
