Default BD player audio question: PCM or bitstream?

While waiting for my TV to be shipped, thought I'd ask a stupid question. I have a Panasonic Bluray player, the BD30K, ran through an Integra 7.8 reciever to a Panasonic TH-58PZ750U. When I watch a movie, should I set my Bluray player to PCM or bitstream? Also, do you change the audio setting on the reciever to match the movie ie. Dolby Digital or TRU HD, or THX? or does the reciever to that itself? I would like to know how to get the best sound out of the movies I'll be playing.

Bitstream. The receiver should have a setting to automatically detect whatever the player is throwing at it. You may have to select this setting, but it'll be there.

Go with Bitstreme on the BD player. I don't know about your receiver. It may select Bitstreme automatically. There are no stupid questions. This was an excellent question. Others here will probably be able to help you more....

Agreed - a good question.

If your receiver can decode the audio codec you want go with Bitstream through HDMI.

However, the BD30 doesn't do much decoding. I'm going to assume that your AVR will do a much better job all around. It's what it's meant for after all.

Nice receiver, definitely go bitstream as the Integra can handle anything you throw at it.

i have the same receiver and player. set your player all options to bitsteam. and maker sure your secondary audio option is off. the receiver will automatically set your listening mode when it detects it from the disc.

I know this is kind of off topic from the original post, but I have heard that the PS3 can't send bitstream, but why does it have the option of PCM or Bitstream in the BD Audio Output menu?

Does that mean with my onkyo 705 I cant hear the top audio right now with my ps3? Or is that for people that dont have a surround setup?

I'm using an Integra 7.1 preamp and I'm actually outputting PCM. I want the PS3 to do the decoding internally and by using the "Direct" setting on the Integra, it passes the decoded signal through, without processing it. If you do this, be sure to go into your BD player menu and allow for all the high resolution flavors of PCM.

with your setup you cannot get dolby trueHD and dts-hdma. you can get top audio on movies that have a uncompressed pcm option though.

the PS3 does not support DTS-HD Master, yet.

But it can decode Dolby TrueHD. You just set the PS3 to Linear PCM.

I can hear TrueHD with the ps3. Linear PCM is the way the ps3 would decode the DTS HD right? (Until a firmware update from sony) Is Linear PCM is considered "uncompressed digital???"

If I upgrade my receiver will I really notice a difference in the sound that I am currently getting from my toslink.
