I have the Panasonic DMP-BD30 Blu-ray Disc Player connected to my Sony STRDA-4300 ES Receiver (via HDMI 1.3a Catagory 2 compliant cables), which has 'all' the advanced high bit audio decoders in my Receiver. In the BD-30 I have the choice of outputting either Bitstream or PCM for the following selections:
Dolby Digital DTS Dolby TruHD DTS HD Master Please only those "who actually know" respond to this question: "What should be the selection (Bitstream or PCM) for each of the above audio formats?" I look forward to an accurate response from the experts !!! [Jim] |

That's simple. Bitstream all.
The BD30 does not internally decode True HD or DTS-HD MA, so if you set it to PCM, all you are going to get is the DD track or DTS 1.5 Mbps track decoded in the panny and sent out as LPCM. To get the benefits of the lossless tracks, you need to bitstream them out via HDMI and let you receiver do the heavy lifting. I am not familiar with your receiver, but if your receiver does not decode True HD or DTS-HD MA, your SOL anyway since the panny can't do that either. |

Thanks guys !!!
What about the regular Dolby Digital and regular DTS? Bitstream or the Linear PCB output? Jim Last edited by JimPullan; 02-20-2008 at 12:09 PM. |

Does anyone care to respond to the second part of my question?

Just select bitstream and let the surround receiver decode it. It doesn't really matter, it simply a question of where the sound is decoded. You can compare DTS og DD to a Zip file. PCM is the unzipped file.

I'd go with bitstream on everything if the player can handle it. I know that on the PS3 if you choose PCM it doesn't want to send out the 6.1 DTS properly on LOTR. Bitstream it does.
This is my big PS3 complaint. On DVD you always want bitstream for the best, but on BD you mostly or always use PCM. |
