Default Bitstream VS Linear PCM

Question to all your experts:

When i play a Blu Ray movie on my PS3 for some reason there's no surround in LPCM mode, i could not hear anything from the rear speakers. But when i choose to play movies in Bistream it becomes surround but everytime i choose Bistream option it says that some Audio from the BD might not be played if choosing this feature. The Bitstream feature also makes a lot of static noises before the movies starts, and when skipping chapters.

First of all, what are Bitstream and LPCM? It seems that the LPCM is the standard for Audio feature but there's no surround, what gives? Does the Blu Ray disc come with different Audio options? And which is better to use - Bistream or LPCM?

Any help would be appreciated.

There is a possibility that your receiver won't decode the LCPM signal beyond a stereo signal. I used to have a receiver that did that. What's the make/model?

My home theatre is the Samsung HT-TQ85 with HDMI input and output, heard some good things about it, but if it doesn't decode beyond stereo then that's just gonna be sad. Good thing i only paid $200 for it.

sounds like its only capable of 2 channel PCM and is why you do not hear it from the surrounds...

If you go to your audio setup option in you ps3 and choose hdmi it pops up a list of formats it can put out through hdmi. My friend's THX pioneer lists pretty much every option you can imagine (up to 7.1 PCM at 192khz or something), while my ps3 hdmi feeds direct into my tv, so it only shows two PCM stereo options. Try that on your system. That should definitively answer the question you are asking. Most receivers that can do the 'real deal' still start at $500 or so.
