Default Linear PCM or bitstream

I just purchased a PS3 and no one can seem to give me the answer I am looking for. I am hooking this up to an Onkyo TX SR806 and I would like to know do I set it at Linear PCM or bitstream to ouput Dolby True HD and DTS master audio. With either one the screen will not say Dolby True HD or DTS master audio. What am I doing wrong? I did not have this problem with the BDPS350.

LPCM. The PS3 cannot bitream the hd codecs. The screen will not say anything other than Multi-channel in or PCM in because the decoding is being done in the player.

The PS3 will NOT bitstream TrueHD or DTS-HD MA. It will have to be set to LPCM to get those codecs to work with your receiver.

Your receiver will NOT EVER be able to show the little lights on it for those two codecs; so if that's what you're looking for, stop.

The PS3 converts the audio tracks to PCM (they remain identical, however) and sends that over to your receiver. I think Okyo says something like "Multichannel" on it or something like that. But you won't see the TrueHD or DTS-HD MA lights.

Hope that helps. That's about as plain as I can make it.

If the sound is great and you're just missing seeing the Dolby or DTS tag on your AVR just hit the "Select" button on the PS3 controller every so often. You'll see the codec at the top of your screen.

Set the PS/3 to convert to LPCM.

In this mode the receiver will not indicate whether the source was DTS MA or Dolby Digital HD.

However the PS/3 has a button on its remote (?the select button?) that shows this kind of information on-screen.

Originally I was not happy that the receiver only showed LPCM on its display. However when my PS/3 was in the shop for repairs I hooked up an Insignia Blu-ray player. With that setup I let the receiver decode things.

What I discovered was that:

1) I could barely read the information (on a Yamaha receiver). I had to get up off the couch to read it.

2) I missed all the detailed information that the PS/3 on-screen display provided. It has details about Mbps for both audio and video and I've really grown addicted to that info!

But with the Insignia player you weren't getting HD codecs.

This actually has been answered a ton of times on this forum. Set the PS3 to Linear PCM- it cannot bitstream the lossless codecs. Your receiver will read "Multich" as in "Multichannel PCM" because that is what it is receiving. This is lossless audio. You can confirm by hitting display on your remote and see the lossless audio track is selected.

*edit* And, lol... don't bring up a post and then go work on something else, cuz chances are 20 people have already answered the question.
