***MODS PLEASE DELETE THIS THREAD IF YOU GUYS FEEL IT IS TOO CONTROVERSIAL***
This is not meant for a racial debate or any way generalizing any particular groups of age, race, culture, religion, or political background. Well, went out to a local casino for the Chinese New Year buffet and it was a zoo. Lines were out the door and holding my 14 months old and my wife trying to move through the crowd was interesting. Finally after 30mins we got seated and I went to go get some food. I was at the beginning of the buffet ready to pile my plate with some good stuff. There was a young couple in front of me, looks like they are on a date. This asian lady cuts in front of them and grabbed like 4 pork buns and left. The guy was frustrated and said 'Damn those Chinese people, they are so f****** rude.' Being asian descent, I couldnt resist and said 'excuse me?' He looked at me for a sec, hesitated, and repeated what he said. I told him to knock the generalizations off, address the person, not a culture, gender, or race. His girlfriend proceed to tell me it is none of my business and stfu. Pretty much almost ended in a fist fight until I told him to shut up, get his food, and get out of my way. End of event. My question is, was I in the wrong telling this kid he needs to have more respect? I agree the fact that lady should have waited her turn instead of cutting in, I understand his anger and frustration, and I see why hes upset. But it wasnt just his statement that concerned me. The fact the statement just rolled off his tongue without a second thought was frightening. It showed the intolerance and lack of respect in some of younger generation. Im thinking of my son when he is in his twenties and Im afraid he will be just as rude and narrow minded as the trend I see today in some of the younger Gen-Y kids. Im turning 30 this year and the kid is probably in his early 20s. Again, I did NOT start this thread as a racial debate, but merely an observation of a chain of events I have encountered within the last few years. This was the straw that broke the camel's back. And I want to hear what people think or have experienced. Do you agree with what I did or not? |

Damm I can see how this could turn into a fiery debate yet on the other hand....
It would seem young people now a days dont know when to shut their mouth. Respect for elders has gone out the window. I admit you were in the right for saying something because that was rude and sounded racist. It should have generalized and said that, and then get all crazy about it when you said something. I hear plenty of horrible stuff at my work and I honestly feel its not the person speaking its whos they hang around, what they watch, etc. that is making them say the things they do. I even admit to using racial slurs sometimes when I shouldn't and its a bad habit to get out of. Of course the biggest example is using the word "Jew"...god only knows about many times I have used the word in a negative connotation yet I would never say it disrespectfully to anyone, since I have Jewish Heritage (not the Hanukkah kind). So yeah its something that should be addressed and parents shouldn't be the one showing the bad example either. Thats my side of it, at least. ![]() |

I don't think you were wrong for wanting to say something. But you have to know that if someone's that rude and ignorant to make that kind of comment in the first place that nothing you say will fix anything.
Kids these days just think it's funny to be disrespectful and rude and to make comments like that. And they are especially looking for any situation where they can prove they're "HARD". Next time weigh the potential risks before you react to someone else's foolishness. What if he flipped out? Your child or wife might've been harmed. Don't worry about your child growing up to be like that. Just set a good example like I'm sure you already are doing. |
